Yes you can! I recently got pulled by an unmarked copper for 2 reasons/offenses. Everything was calm and we chatted about what I had done. They checked the car over and all was ok... no points on my licence and my personal check came up clean. He gave me a warning and marked my card and that was that. very reasonable chaps, took everything i said into consideration when I was caught red handed(my spidey sense wasn't working that night:D ). I should have really ended up in court for it but due to these 2 officers... im not!

Good on you!! Wish the same thing would have happened to me on the M6..... Got stopped for having an illegal plate on the front and didn't even get chance to explain before they had written the ticket!!

I then thought I had nothing left to lose but be funny with them. If they had given me a VDRS then the problem would have been solved but no they gave me a £30 fine, acted like a pair of tw@ts and the illegal plate stayed on my car!!

What was the point of the exercise but to get £30 for their coffers!! This is why the relationship between the Police and the Public is at an all time low!!:(

Trev, are you seriously suggesting that it is ok to make a phone call if you are sat at a set of lights then? If you can conduct a phone call exactly between the lights turning red and back to green with out moving the car at all then you are a better man than me. Then again I'm a sales rep so what would I know about making calls on the move!!

Yes! But I might be different to most in that I don't actually have conversations. It's normally the missus who I'm on the way to pick up, and it'll just be to see where I am - usually I don't answer it (which is pretty much good enough to let her know I'm driving), but if I'm at lights, I'll pick up the phone and say "I'm driving, be there in 5 mins", she replies with an 'OK' and the phone's gone.

Would it be reasonable if I got 6 points and a fine for this?

I don't use hands free cos turning the bluetooth thing on and off and setting it up each time i get in and out of the car is a pain in the fookin ass. So I WILL use my phone, but when stationary, at lights etc. And I am brief as tbourner says he is above. If I get nicked for that I will be livid, it's hardly like I have the thing pinned to my ear at who knows what speed on the outside lane of a motorway in the rain is it?

Obviously not mate! You'd have to be damned unlucky too... I just wouldn't put myself in that position unless it was an absolute emergency. I don't think it boils down to whether I think it's dangerous or not, I would rather not give the coppers the pleasure!!

You sure you've got that set up correctly? I have a basic Nokia car-kit in each car, and just by putting the ignition to ACC, the phone, or my wife's phone will connect to the car. Dead easy, I can leave it in my briefcase or pocket and just press the little dashboard button to make a call.

The phone I have (Motorola Razr) only has the bluetooth signal on for a short period of time before it switches off if it cannot find a connection. Which means that I have to manually switch bluetooth on and then manually connect it to the widgit in the car. As soon as it goes out of range (ie if I leave the car for any time at all) I have to set it all up all over again. Perhaps it's cos it is a cheapo hands free kit, I know some of em cost £££hundreds
