Andyhannah
I have an old english mastiff and actually its quite athletic, i also have 2 bull mastiffs and they are by far the better breed in my opinion.
tbourner
I love dog breeds that are unspoilt, and still capable of doing the job they were bred for, rather than emasculated to suit fashion. Same here, I don't think I'm quite ready to look after Komondors or Anatolians yet though!! I'll start with something a bit easier.

Supragal
I love Mastiffs, although it took me ages to realise that mastiff= English Mastiff= Old English Mastiff as the pics I've seen of recent dogs look SO different to the ones I knew when I was a kid, even in that space of time! They were much finer set although still huge, but capable of lots of physical activity. At crufts this year I was really put off by the ones there, fat panting, lumbering lumps that manage a 5 min walk twice a day, end off. WTF?! There's a breeder in Scotland that still does the old type, working Old English Mastiff. He used to go to Crufts, but had no chance of doing any good as the dogs were totally different to the winning "type", but he refused to capitulate and breed the huge ones. Supragal
Even those look far heavier than I like personally, the bitches are more like it, even so I don't think I'd have one - far too much drool
Supragal
Somewhat off topic but thought I'd put this up, Stig couple of days ago, clearly not on his 'throw' and ruining the cushions but sooo cute http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/9927/boobooln2.jpg

garethr
I love dog breeds that are unspoilt, and still capable of doing the job they were bred for, rather than emasculated to suit fashion. Take the Old English Mastiff, once a lovely working breed, full of stamina, and athletic, now bred to meet the fads of having a gross, short lived, inactive lump of lard, with no useful purpose, save to enable the owner to say "My dog weighs 14 stone". If you look at pictures of the 18th century you can see just how the dog has changed from a hard worker to a fat shirker. That's true of so many "Kennel Club" breeds. You only have to look at the dichotomy between the show and working strains of virtually all those breeds which still do a job. So called "dog lovers" have a lot to answer for.
