Muffleman
I love big dogs, but unfortunately it's simple - big dogs BIG poop ! And seeing as it's me that has to clear up after 'my dog', I think my next dog wont be something you can saddle and ride ! Unfortunately. Chris Wilson
He's Aslans brother, in Turkey. Long story about Aslan, as some of you know, he was a rescue, and after a week he decided to have a go at me as I went to put his lead on and take him for a walk. After that my wife and I were unable to approach him, or even go near his kennel without him flying into a serious rage. He went, after his Turkish owners collected him, with him being as good as gold for them, to a breeder iin Wrexham, and stayed there for months. A man from Scotland pleaded to have him, and was made to sign a disclaimer, even though he had 2 already, and knew Aslans history. He had him a week, too, then he turned on him and hospitalised him. No one could get in the room of the house in which the incident took place, 2 vets refusing to try and snare him with a loop. He was shot with a dart by a local wolf sanctuary owner, and then euthanased SOMETHING had happened to him in the past, involving someone grabbing his collar, which was the basic scenario in both bites, as we went to put his lead on. I still feel bad about it, but next thing he'd have killed someone, or done some really serious damage. he has two brothers, both have been trustworthy dogs, by all accounts, although they are NOT a breed for the inexperienced or those wanting a house dog! We have 2 of these, the deal with the breeder being we took a young bitch rescue if she homed Aslan rather than him being put down. the bitch, Baschka, is a gem, and the older bitch, which we have had from a pup, and is now 7, is more typical, and feisty with strangers, and intolerant of other bitches. If anything, the brother in Turkey is even bigger than Aslan was, and he was a giant of a beast. He's in the picture with our 7 year old bitch, Tansu. ADL Mark
That's a sad story, very scary though. Would have been interesting to know what happened in his past to make him like that.
Supragal
Wow, that is some bite. Sad story but by the sounds of it the sensible decision was taken. They are quite a stroppy breed anyway judging by your posts about them. What are their energy levels like? How high at the shoulder do they get? Pete
Wow, that is some bite. You should've seen the blood soaking through the bandages. It was so bad it put him off his beer! Didn't realise it had the new owner too. It's a shame, but once a dog is like this it's only a matter of time.
Chris Wilson
They are a very stroppy breed, I love dog breeds that are unspoilt, and still capable of doing the job they were bred for, rather than emasculated to suit fashion. Take the Old English Mastiff, once a lovely working breed, full of stamina, and athletic, now bred to meet the fads of having a gross, short lived, inactive lump of lard, with no useful purpose, save to enable the owner to say "My dog weighs 14 stone". If you look at pictures of the 18th century you can see just how the dog has changed from a hard worker to a fat shirker. Anatolians are probably the ultimate flock guarding breed, aloof, wary and hard as nails, still without too many health issues specific to the breed, and still relatively unpopular and unspoilt. They'll stand living out in freezing cold, or burning heat, and are still quite primitive in their ways. The only similar breed, less spoilt, is the Komondor, we had 2 over the years, but Jane says no more, as they do smell, and they are a REAL handful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrasOD2Je64
Chris Wilson
You should've seen the blood soaking through the bandages. It was so bad it put him off his beer! Only temporarily, but i admit, it hurt like hell after an hour, and going out for a meal and beer maybe wasn't one of my better ideas... Didn't realise it had the new owner too. It's a shame, but once a dog is like this it's only a matter of time. The sad thing is, until he was triggered he was a lovely dog, I suspect he was used as a guard dog, in a yard in London, and someone tried to get the better of him. He seemed to have remembered something of it, and a relative stranger taking him by the collar set alarm bells ringing (and blood flowing ). I was lucky, I think the Scottish owner needed a load of stitches.
