I maintain if you can find a x1950 (any model) they are the best you'll get before you go to directx 10.

I don't know a lot about this stuff, but for the past month everything I have read about graphics cards says that the following is best value for money card out there http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-064-OK&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=404

Nice to see I'm agreed with :D. Its the best AGP card out there for definite, and the only thing I'm put off with using it on PCI-E is the fact its not dx10, if only they had a decent mid range dx10 card. Faster than the 8600/2600, but cheaper than the 8800/2900.

I'd still rather it over a 8600 even if it is dx10. Had this discussion with a mate this morning!

Agreed :)

If you need DX10 then I would spend £70 more and go for the 2900 Pro

like he said. for your budget one of these would be best. If you want a bit of future proofing an 8600 gt or gtx or if you can stretch to it 8800 gt. not sure on how much these go for but as far as dx10 game are concerned you might aswell wait for the 2nd or even 3rd gen of new cards to come out. as far as Ba$tarding Micro$oft are concerned all those who bougth dx10 cards, are bolloxed seeing as though they have bought out dx10.1

so the other option is to buy a motherboard? then a decent card?i'v always been a pc game man but recently bought an xbox360,but can i fek get used to the controller for games such as gears of war,or any 1st person shooter:(

What card do you have at the moment?

As I mentioned before the Nvidia 7600GT is about the best card you'll get for AGP. It's a good card though but depending on what you have already it might not be such a big upgrade.

edit: The ATI X1950 would also be a good option, they do still do an AGP version.

Haha, the Ti 4200 was a great card though. I personally run an ATI X1800 GTO from HIS (it is the only company that overclocks in the factory so you know its safe). It runs everything absolutely fantastic. I have always been a die hard ATI fan though. My laptop runs 2X Nvidia Geforce Go 7900 GS 256mb and it works like a dream, kills the battery life tho. Getting a little off topic. Generally in my experience (which is fairly wide ranging) ATI may set you back a few more quid, but the quality is better than Nvidia in terms of lifespan, but then again, I am a yank so what do I know :p

Again, they're PCI-Express.

Keef, either of the two cards I mentioned would be a huge performance increase over the old 4200, it's what I used to have before upgrading to the 7600GT.

ooh bugger sorry didnt read the last posts

Didnt the 7900 and 7950 come in AGP?

I don't believe so, but I may be wrong. When I had a quick scan for prices on a couple of websites there weren't any 79xx cards listed anyway.

edit: just seen your ebay link, guess they did! Expensive though, not really worth the premium over the 7600GT.
