Motor Vehicle Tyre Code

 

New Tyres

 

• A new tyre capable of being fitted to a wheel of a passenger car or light trailer must bear the 'E' mark.

 

 

New Retreaded Tyres

 

• A new retreaded tyre capable of being fitted to a wheel of a passenger car, commercial vehicle or trailer must be marked BS AU 144e.

 

New retreaded tyres must not bear the 'E' mark.

 

Repairs to a new retreaded tyre must be properly carried out.

 

 

Part Worn Tyres/Retreads

 

• Part worn tyres capable of being fitted to a wheel of a motor vehicle or trailer must not have:-

 

(a) Any cut in excess of 25mm or 10% of the section width of the tyre.

 

 

• Part worn tyres capable of being fitted to a wheel of a motor vehicle or trailer must have:-

 

a) The 'E' mark which was moulded on at the time of manufacture.

 

(b) The word 'Part-worn' permanently and legibly applied to the tyre adjacent to the 'E' mark.

 

 

• Part worn retreaded tyres must bear:-

 

(a) The mark BS AU 144 b, c, d or e. This mark to have been permanently and legibly applied at the time of retreading.

 

(b) The word 'Part-worn' adjacent to the mark described above.

The biggest problem would that an insurer could refuse to pay you out if non E marked tyres are on your car. Third parties would still be OK though the insurer could also chase you to recover whatever they had to pay out to any third parties.
