MarkR
I've found a way to offset the emmisions from a decatted supra... http://www.blackle.com/ When your screen is white, be it an empty word page, or the Google page, your computer consumes 74 watts, and when the screen is black it consumes only 59 watts. Mark Ontkush wrote an article about the energy saving that would be achieved if Google had a black screen, taking in account the huge number of page views, according to his calculations, 750 mega watts/hour per year would be saved. In a response to this article Google created a black version of its search engine, called ' Blackle ' , with the exact same functions as the white version, but with a lower energy consumption, check it out: - http://www.blackle.com/
Big Ads
Homepaged!
Thorin
Blackle was created by Heap Media to remind us all of the need to take small steps in our everyday lives to save energy. Blackle searches are powered by Google Custom Search. Not created by google. I'm sceptical of the claims too.
MarkR
I've done a test search, and the new page does have more ads... might be a sneaky plot by google to generate more income..

Snooze
Doesn't make a difference for energy usage on LCD screen, by the way.
carl0s
Doesn't make a difference for energy usage on LCD screen, by the way. That's what I was thinking just then. My backlight is on regardless. Who uses CRTs any more!
MrRalphMan
Read this the other day, LCD's not change the power consumption with different colours.. Maybe the old CRT with the extra rads required to make the plasma glow would make a difference. Anyway I like the white, it makes my skin glow..
