Why is vista so sh*t ? For some reason my laptops started to respond really slowly and i mean slow , and for what reason i just don't know . its also making the internet run very slowly , if i want to view any pictures people have attached in there threads i click on it then go mash a cup of tea .... its that long .

I've tried going back to a recovery date when i knew the computer was ok but this didn't work i just get a message saying it can't do it .

The only thing i can think of is my GF tried installing a printer on it and it said something about it can't do it because of some driver . i've tried unistalling all of this but it just hasn't made any difference .

Can i reboot vista as when i bought the laptop i didn't get a booting disc in with it unlike when i had XP .

Help me please peeps .

I put Vista on my HTPC. I basically wanted Media Centre, which is pretty good in Vista.

But I agree Vista does suck. When I first installed it I could hear my hard drives constantly accessing. I thought 'What the hell is it doing!' A bit of looking and digging I found that the system is constantly indexing all the files on the system.

This is basically a good idea if you always search for files, because you're too incompitent to create a couple of folders to organise your work.

This is a bad idea because most of us know where we put a file and search once in a blue moon, and don't mind the 10 seconds or so it takes to find it. Also indexing isn't process orientated, i.e. if you load a large app, like photoshop, Windows doesn't go - ohh lets stop using the hard disk whilst we load the app, noooo lets keep indexing so the app loads slower.

So turn it off then....Urmm... No.

Microsoft had the wisdom to not allow you to turn this service off without basically hacking it about. I may be wrong about this.

but I went through shutting services down and finally managed to prevent indexing from running.

There are quiet a few articles on the net about improvong the shocking performance of Vista, but you'vve got to be fairly brave to attempt it.

Best bet is to go into task manager (Ctrl + Alt + Del) and take a look at what processes are running, this may give you a clue as to why the system is running so poo.

Make sure you have downloaded the very latest windows updates and also latest drivers for the hardware (video card, etc).

It's odd. Performance is pretty poor on my work PC, which is similar spec to my home PC except I have a much better motherboard at home and Vista runs perfectly.

Best thing is to disable half the Indexing and System Restore features which really kill slower PCs.

Only vista thats worth getting is ultimate, it genuinely runs programs etc faster than any of the others, best of the lot for gaming.

I'd stick with XP personally.

There should be a way of creating a restore disk built in/provided as software btw.

And apparently there will be a service pack january time(ish)

I have it on my laptop. I made a list of all the things I turned off to make it a usable system - basically I turned it back into XP.

However, I'm trying the Aero interface again, and now I've been using it some of the nice features are starting to shine through - just a shame you have to have technical knowledge to be able to make it usable in the first place!

I have Vista Ultimate (with Aero) running on a Dell 620 laptop with 2gb ram...I'm typing this on it...I couldn't be happier with Vista's performance, wierd no! :D

I iz obviously l33t at v1sta.

The laptop fires up quickly and shutsdown very fast.

My PC is staying XP Pro though, as that's for games.

they need to make some service packs like they did for xp to sort it out.....

Vista SP1 is due first quarter of 2008. As is SP3 for XP!.

Been running Vista Ultimate since last November and I may be about to take the unprecedented step of going back to an earlier verison of Windows (XP) - I really don't like it.

MS have designed Vista for the masses i.e. those who are new to computers (no disrespect to those people!) - but in doing so has alienated the experienced users by dumbing down the OS.

Just try backing up selected files on your drive as an example!

Have you tried un-installing the printer?

If system restore won't work you need to go back through things taking them out until fixed. Try the printer first.

If that doesn't work then use msconfig to disable things on boot-up. Let us know if you want to do this as plenty of people on thiss forum are pc wizzes and should be able to talk you through disabling startup items and then re-enabling until you find what's causing the problem.

:D

I really like Vista! It was a bit slow when I had 1GB of RAM but when I upgraded to 2GB it made a huge difference. I've now got 4GB and it shuts down in seconds.

i think Vista is great, it came with my new laptop which is a 2GB and 160 Gb Hdd, i hear it takes up alot of memory though. But mine is not slow at loading :D

All rubbish. Ultimate isn't any faster, if anything it's more bloated, turn off the aero glass interface and it'll speed things up.

You can't create a restore disk to restore it back to factory default, he should really have gotten the media in order to reinstall the OS, but some manufacturers (e.g. Dell) have a utility partition that you can boot into and restore from an image.

...and the service pack will be more like easter time ;)

Anyway, Linux FTW!!!!1!!!7!

I'm still using XP. What, exactly, is the point of running Vista at the moment and knocking the performance of your PC back 2 years? Is it because a) it's got loads of new features that aren't in any other OS and you desperately need them? or b) it's NEW. NEW AND SHINY. NEW NEW NEW SO I MUST HAVE IT.

I suspect I know which it is :)
