Foz
Hi all, ive had a problem now with the rear lights not working for a week or so, they were fine and one day just stopped. ive checked the fuses and changed the bulbs but still noy joy, ive taken it to a local garage to see if they can find the problem but now he's referred me to an auto electrician. Im depserate to get this sorted as it failed the test on this so ive not got long to get it sorted before i can take it back without getting charged again. if you can give me any pointers that would be great. When you put the lights on the back ones dont come on yet, the reg light, brake lights, indicators and reverse lights all work fine. ive checked the fuses under the bonnet and also the fuse box under the drivers side, im not aware of any others to check is there? any help would be great, am i missing something silly? Cheers guys. Foz.
Guest Chumpalot
When you swapped the bulbs over did you buy double-filament bulbs?
Foz
I think they were, im assuming you mean is there TWO filaments inside the glass? The bulds were exactly the same, i gave them a close inspection when i bought them. Someone mentioned there may be a relay in the boot somewhere for the lights, im not sure if this is the problem or not?
TT Robbo
i think poor rik gardiner had a problem like that before he was sadly lost. his threads live on,give them a try,he still may be able to help you and think he would be chuffed. Guigsy
i had the same thing. one one of the fillaments in all 4 bulbs had gone. so the brake fillament still worked. however the one for the headlights didnt.
Foz
im not sure i understand, do you mean the front lights as you said headlights? Im talking about the rear cluster when i put the lights on, the fronts work fine but the rears dont, neither does the fog light at the rear although the reg plate light works fine along with the brake lights, indicators and reverse! strange.... Guigsy
yeah i meant that the one in the rear cluster that comes on when your headlights do . Id check all of the bulbs again
Foz
Ahh right, well ive changed the only two bulbs that dont come on in the rear clusters, theyre both the light ones. I also took the new ones i put in and swapped them with the brake ones, but i still had the same problem. That just told me the new bulbs were working fine in the brake lights. Im stuck now, i booked it into an auto elec for Friday as ive got a few days left to get it re-tested. I can imagine the auto electrician saying oh yes the problem was [insert something really stupid here] to me on Friday! hahah. Thx for all your help anyhow guys. Foz. Matt Harwood
I've seen this several times before. Sadly, we, (the customer and I), have always opted for the quick / cheap repair of simply connecting the rear light circuit back to a wire that goes live with lighting. I'm fairly sure that the actual fault lies with the bulb failure unit in the passenger side rear quater panel...
Foz
Ive not heard of the bulb failure unit? Is that accessible via the boot? Think its just gonna have to be patched through from the reg plate light or something?
AlanM
You only get one working day to fix anything for a re-test now AFAIK
Foz
God i hope not!, the guy at the testing station said i had 10 days to get it back to him. I magine having only one day to get it back to them in the event of any failure is a little too unrealistic, how are you supposed to find a somewhere to get it fixed in a day!? *gulp* ill see when i try to take it back hahah. I ripped theswitch out and put a temporary one in with a feed off the cigarette lighter and it it is still like that
