Myles
Can anyone tell me the correct procedure for checking ATF level? I know the car must be level & at operating temperature , but is it also necessary to put the selector in each position for several seconds 1st & then check it with the selector in neutral? I think that's how it was done on the TH350 GM transmission ... but that's a 30 year old design. Also , would overfilling cause the rear seal to burst on a trackday any more so than a few 130 mph bursts on the motorway?
Guest Martin F
Do a search for ATF level checking, it has been discussed quite a bit over previous months. Overfilling the auto transmission can result in it being thrown out when things get a bit spirited. We had this with our MKIII when we first had it. Somebody had overfilled it and on our way down to Boxhill all of a sudden there was a massive plume of smoke behind us when doing about 90leptons. Pulled over and checked everything at the nearest garage and all was fine, just ATF fluid level had dropped back to a normal level. Since then it's never happened again. I just guess the additional fluid caused too much pressure on the rear seal.
