Gerry
Doing my first fencing competition this year tomorrow (ought to be in bed really). It's the first since I knackered my knee up in last year championships, so a big nervous (OK - shi**ing myself) ! It's a big one in Bristol, with 194 in the Senior Men For those who have never done it, it brill fun, I fence "epee" which is the weapon who's rules most follow a real duel (ie - no rules) It's very much like boxing, but with swords, simply nothing can beat whacking a 6 foot twenty year old with ARMY on his back ! If you like sport, are competetive and like to do things yourself (ie not rely on a team) give it a go. OK, alarm set for 6.00am, on the piste at 8.30 (damaged by 9.00) ! Wish me luck... Ewen
One of my cousins (Alan Snell) almost got into the Olympic fencing team 20 odd years ago. I really enjoy watching it as a sport too. I did a bit of fencing at boarding school, jewelry, watches, that sort of stuff.

Gerry
Had a good day... Won four of my six pool fights only being beaten (just) by a yank and a really good Italian. Fell out with a Chineese guy who took exception to me whacking his foot four times in a row (really pissed him off) and shoulder charged me - good fun for a few minutes... Got beaten in the elimination rounds by a nice guy who was better than me (top 30 GB fencer) so can't complain. Nice to get back into it... forgot how cute some of the ladies were (although we don't get to stab them) Re your comments: The Army & Navy never do very well although there are a few good RAF guys, I went with my Army mate (stationed at Warminster) who sadly fenced like a maniac and got beaten in every fight ! Paramedics are in attendence although some of them remind me of vultures ! Yes, it's a very much minority sport, pity, as it's brilliant fun and you don't get as damaged as boxing / kick boxing etc, and you can go on to a greater age, a friend of mine from Bath won the Veterans Ladies Sabre World Championships this last week in Austrailia although it will only get a line or two in the local paper. How about a MKIV Supra club "come & try it day" ? G
