Jake Posted September 13, 2007 Share Posted September 13, 2007 For quite a while now I've noticed a smell of hot oil when I get out of the car after driving it. Tonight I popped the bonnet and had a look at the engine bay and was surprised by quite how hot is was in there. The insulating turbo blanket on the GT40 (Precision GT40/88 0.96A/R) was so hot I couldn't put my hand on it and even the 4" pipe from the compressor housing to the airfillter was too hot to touch for more than a second. (I used to be an exhaust fitter in a previous life, so I'm not being a wuss about how hot these part were ) I also noticed a slight oil leak on the turbo oil return hose, again. Obviously I'm concerned about how hot the engine and engine oil is getting. Not sure what I can do about it though. While writing this I've just remembered that the car has currently got the 2nd cat fitted. I haven't got round to removing it since my MoT a couple of weeks ago. Could this be the problem? Causing higher than normal EGT? Thinking about it, the (3" post-turbo) EGT gauge is showing about 600°c on cruise. That's probably too hot, is it? I wish my Oil Temp gauge sender hadn't packed up the last time I did an oil change. I need it at the moment. Any thoughts? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I can generate 130deg c on track for the oil - no problems though as thats a good temp for it to do its job. So you think it might be nothing to worry about. I just need to sort the slight leak out then. Does your oil drain point straight down or is it at an angle? If it's angled the oil can pool in the cartidge, and over heat! With an oil cooler you shouldn't be getting too hot, do you know if it's on a thermostat? It should be. You do want to get the oil above 100deg to boil off water vapour etc, but without that sender it's going to be hard to decide what's best. Certainly I wouldn't run with the cat in, you need to get rid of the heat asap. My T61 intake would get very hot, but I managed to cool it with a heat shield and some 4" ducting bringing in fresh air under the airfilter, that filler plate Might be worth while getting a piece of stainless and making a shield to protect the brake lines/fluid/resevoir if you feel it's getting too hot in there, as you don't want to add to the brake systems heat load Is your manifold wrapped?? My oil's optimum temp is around 120-130deg c. I do have an oil cooler, but would want to guestimate what the differences would be. There's also an uprated rad in there to help the water temp. Yeah, when I had the other turbo it (the oil drain pipe) was leaking. I thought I'd fixed it when I fitted the new one. Does your oil drain point straight down Yep.
