Not been canoeing/kayaking for a fair while but have decided to get back into it, luckily enough Kent canoes is just around the corner from me and after a few visits I have narrowed the choice down to two models. I am hoping to purchase it tomorrow and will be heading out on the river medway straight away. The guy in the shop said that I need some kind of license that costs 30 pounds a year does anyone know what this entitles me to do. If you guys have any nice spots for me to paddle in the south I'd be very grateful too.

I have been kayaking for many years and have never heard of this licence. I have never paddle on th medway so could not tell you if this licence applies to just that river. I have paddled in the army all over the world including many rivers in the uk. It might be worth you refering to the UK River Guide Book (http://www.UKRGB.co.uk) about this licence in case you do not need it (although nothing surprises me in tis country). As for paddling down south Nene White Water in Northampton is a great place for all levels especially people getting back into it. It is a grade 3 manmade course and is fun, I paddle thgere twice a week and if you ever wanted to meet up PM me and we can sort something out.

Out of interest what two boats are you considering, are they river runners or play boats?

Sounds good to me fella, I opted for the dagger blackwater in the end as I wanted something that was fairly manouveable and relatively fast. Cheers for the link now I'm off for the first go:D

Just got back mate and after a good 15 years away it felt like I'd never stopped. The blackwater seems to be very stable and turns really well, it was a toss up between that and the perception acadia which is slightly longer. I'm finishing early again tomorrow so I can head out for a longer spell to put it through its paces:)

lol

strangely i was looking at the Acadia too (expedition spec with the extra storage).

Was going to go with the blackwater though as it's a tad shorter so more manoevreable and it's got the droppable skeg
