BIG QUESTION smic vs fmic

Does it say if its a new stock SMIC or the old one? The graph itself doesnt make it clear.

Almost anything is better than a knackered stock SMIC.

There are arguments for and against SMIC and FMIC, a search will bring most up.

FMIC - looks 'bling' and has larger area (arguable) but can cause cooing problems as it masks rad. Also needs to be fully ducted to work.

SMIC - cant be seen so most are reluctant to swap it as its money spent that nobody sees. Well ducted and compact with some small to mediumn singles in the UK and USA running well on aftermarket SMICs (CW and others)

On a RR the FMIC wins every time. Especially if the bonnet is kept open during the runs.

On the real road during a hot day the gains may not be so convincing.

Edit:

...and as we all know FMICs are for kewl dudes, while SMICs for hairdressers/trysexuals/eunichs/OAPs:d

I really can't see why this keep coming up, the "what better smic or fmic" given if both were new the surface area of a FMIC should be a clear sign as to which will give a lower outlet temp. Along with the size of opening, just look at where the smic is mounted the opening is tiny compared to the size of a FMIC. Larger opening means more air flow so cooler temps. Add the ducting and a FMIC really show it's benefits.

Well I agree with the last statement kind of but not the rest. The car was designed around having an SMIC and is well ducted and in a low pressure area. If the SMIC can cool the temperatures enough then there's really no advantage to running an FMIC. This was all covered in a big long posting the other day.

Thats all very good if you still have the stock bumper with the stock ducting. FMIC would be better for people with aftermarket bumpers imo.

I read the big topic about this the other day, some very good points on both sides of the debate, was an interesting read :)

True, with many aftermarket bumpers the stock SMIC loses the ducting - becoming a semi-concealed, corroded, sad sideshow

...but if you're into dumping the carefully-designed aerodynamics for 'looks' then a nice, shiny FMIC is mandatory anyway.

innit
