Guest Geneb
I'm going to the dvla tomorrow to change my plate from J666PAN to B19UNS what would be the best thing to do with the old plate if i intended to sell it on?
Class One
Have it placed on retention with the DVLA. Then the records will show that the VRM is still owned but not currently assigned to a vehicle. You'll be issued with a retention certificate which you'll need for when you seel the plate and pass on title. I think.

DaveK
My mate just did this - think it cost him somewhere around £100 (can't remember the exact figure but it was that +/- £20).

DaveK
You might have one problem though. I thought you had to arrange in advance to put the number on retention. My mate did it because he's gone to Miami for a couple of years - and he had to delay the sale of his car while he waited for the paperwork to come through from DVLA. Yours might be different - since you are assiging another number to your car - but I suspect not. I have a feeling you should probably have arranged with the DVLA to put the current registration on retention, which would have got you a normal reg. Then you could have assigned your new private reg to the car. I have a feeling you're going to find out the local registration office cannot put your old number on retention when you assign your new one.
