Then the records will show that the VRM is still owned but not currently assigned to a vehicle. DaveK Posted September 10, 2007 Share Posted September 10, 2007 You might have one problem though. I thought you had to arrange in advance to put the number on retention. My mate did it because he's gone to Miami for a couple of years - and he had to delay the sale of his car while he waited for the paperwork to come through from DVLA. Yours might be different - since you are assiging another number to your car - but I suspect not. I have a feeling you should probably have arranged with the DVLA to put the current registration on retention, which would have got you a normal reg. Then you could have assigned your new private reg to the car. I have a feeling you're going to find out the local registration office cannot put your old number on retention when you assign your new one.
