Engine cutting out

Can anyone give me ideas on things to check.

My engine has started to cut out intermittantly. So far it has cut out twice at WOT at about 5000rpm. It left me with no throttle response but the rev counter was still working, I selected neutral whilst rolling and it dropped to idle, select drive, and away it goes, no problem.

Once, just approaching a junction as I stopped, so did the engine. I just restarted it and drove away.

Lastly, as I was reversing very slowly, (aproaching a wall), the car stalled and would not re-start. It just turned over but wouldn't fire up. After about a minute, (which seemed like an eternity), It fired up and carried on wothout a problem.

At no time have I had the red triangle warning sign displayed.

My first thoughts are to check the supply wires on the RLTC as I know it won't allow the injectors to work without power.

Any other suggestions?

Can you check for engine error codes by connecting the terminals on the diagnostics box?

Could be any number of things...I had a problem on my GT4 with bad wiring for the ignitor which was very similar sounding. This gave an error code, 13 or 14 I think. Check here for list of Toyota error codes.

How about the dat file for the RLTC could it have corrupted?

Can you turn RLTC off??? Test it without it turned on.

Have you modded your car in anyway recently?

What fuel have you been using? I ask as before I switched to Optimax my car would cutout whilst idling when cold. I don't think your symptoms are the same but worth considering.

It sounds like a fuel supply problem...check your OX1 sensor..what boost pressure are you running at WOT/5,000rpm???

Sounds like you are going to have to experience it a bit more to get enough behaviour info to diagnose.

It's odd that it cut out at WOT as well as idle and gentle reversing.

Watch out for:

Is it a 'clean' death? As in, it doesn't chug and splutter a bit first?

Does it happen when cold, hot, or doesn't it matter?

Is it getting more frequent?

How much fuel is in the tank when it happens?

Any other symptoms - lack of power, hesistation, black exhaust smoke, that sort of thing? Marked increase in fuel usage?

The wierd thing is the WOT incident. A clean death at WOT could only really be fuel supply related, unless the RLTC is going doolally and cutting all the injectors at once. Switching that off might be a start, as already suggested.
