Bird strike

Recommended Posts

Just had a bird strike at 50mph on the windscreen of my new Elise. A bit lower and I'm pretty sure it would have cracked the clamshell. Windscreen was undamaged apart from a nasty smear :p

Any idea what speed would be required to crack the windscreen?

And here I was expecting to here some agony aunt story about a blokes missus not putting out *grin*...

You must have got lucky to be honest, must have glanced the bird at the right angle.. count yourself lucky, decent sized pidgeon can make a real mess..

It would depend on the mass of the bird in question, the area of the windscreen and possibly the speed of the bird.

My dad had a car come in work that had hit a pheasant head on at 60mph; the bugger punched a hole in the glass, got skinned and subsequently exploded inside the car. Not good. There was just a lumpy mess on the parcel shelf and the ENTIRE interior needed to be replace as it was just caked in pheasant viscera...

That's gross! I think I was lucky :D

Just one of those unavoidable things though. I've hit a pigeon and a couple of cats before (and I love cats so that's not very nice :( ) The birds today just flew out of a hedge and one didn't quite make it out high enough.

Mind you, if one damaged my car and survived I'll probably kick it to death :p

OK for some unknown reason that made me laugh out loud. On the train, in 1st class. I'm now trying to look inconspicuous...
