Also how does X become Christ is to do with the cross he was put on, if so that's confusing the event with Easter or should that be Xter? rant over:p The X in Xmas is from the Greek character X (Chi - pronounced kie - rhymes with die). The very early Christian church being almost totally made up of ex-pat Greeks living in Palestine, their standard name for Christ (Christos)started with X (chi). The early Christians often referred to Christ by X - his Greek initial. You can see the X symbol commonly today in the overprinted P and X symbols used by Catholics (meaning Chi & Rho - the first two letters of Christ's name). Xmas is not only acceptable, it is probably more accurate than an anglo-saxon rendition starting with Ch.

Bill Prawn
Great answer Keith. I too use google:p The trouble is that the uneducated have hijacked it now to be a shortened version of the Festival. There are many different versions of what and when is Christmas. There is arguments for St Nicholas to be Father Christmas which would give the origins of the Christmas tradition in Turkey. What my pet hate is with is the overly used Xmas that has become associated with the commercialism of the event. shiny Gold and red decorations from Wilkinsons, etc By the way, may I wish you a very merry Yuletide and a prosperous New Year.
