Jake
I don't want to put a bazillion miles on my Supra but I can't decide what car to get for commuting. If I go to work on the motorway it's about 55 miles each way. If I go the twisty A-road/B-road route it's only 35 miles. The A-road way is lots more fun but sometimes I just want to get there, you know? Either route takes about the same time and strangely the motorway route uses less fuel. Anyway, I've been thinking about maybe an Impreza. I don't know much about them though. This one looks OK : http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/232855.htm but it doesn't say anything about being a WRX or STi. Does that mean it's a lower spec one? I don't want to buy one and then have everyone tell me it's Impreza equivalent to the lardy UK Spec or NA or whatever. What about this one : http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/193050.htm ? I like the colour but the car looks a bit rough in a few places. (http://www.japmetal.co.uk/blksubaru/) Any thoughts?

Guigsy
id definately go for the blue one. you dont need a speed demon for comuting to work do you? its a turbo anyway. the classic (and best) scooby shape and a nice colour. the black one looks dull
Jake
Get a job closer to home?I like this one. Moving house isn't an option either. id definately go for the blue one. you dont need a speed demon for comuting to work do you? its a turbo anyway. the classic (and best) scooby shape and a nice colour. the black one looks dull So the blue one is a lower spec then? To me, there's no point getting a Scooby if it's a slow one. They're butt ugly and tinny but the two I've been in were both quite quick (almost j-spec BPU quick i would estimate). Guigsy
i dunno but its still a 2l turbo
tooquicktostop
I brought a new 2002 WRX and would say now it was still one of the best cars I have owned, comfortable, quick and very very reliable, the car had a factory prodrive kit fitted from new and was in black, they are going quite cheap now, I sold mine for 15K after 2 years (cost over 23K new)they must be a lot less now ? n boost
Scooby's ain't brilliant on fuel, so might not be that economical. I also find the seats a bit hard on long drives. They eat clutches and break the diff/shafts if launched. Not bad for the money though. I would consider m3 for similiar money.
Nick
I wouldn't want an Impreza for commuting, not unless I could thrash it each day down the lanes and was prepared to pay an arm and a leg for fuel. A friend of mine had one a few years ago and was forever bitching about the MPG.

johnnyknox
I love the classic Impreza. I used to have one a while back and it was great fun. However as a sensible car option they are rather expensive (insurance, fuel, tax..etc) Thing to look out for aswell (with the classics) is the gear box, mine went through two of them, stripping 3rd gear both times. Oh and if you get a good, well looked after example of the classic WRX, it will see off the newer STIs The classic Impreza is as close to the rally car you will get, the new ones just seem to be a bit boring and the lag on the 04 STI I went out in was terrible. jaymdee
I think the classic Imprezza from 2000 had 215 bhp. pretty rapid though as it wouldn't have all the safety crap cars need now so I guess kerb weight would be pretty low. MPG prbably only a bit better than the Supra, especially as you know you would use the 4wd performance on those back roads
Ark
The classic Impreza is not a comfort-car. Poor MPG, poor sound insulation, low quality interior. Good cars if you're OK with the costs and can rag it around, but for chugging up the motorway to work, forget it. Oh yeah, and they blow the big end if you do an oil change incorrectly. The new-age Impreza on the other hand, is a good 30,000/year car. Best thing is to get over to Sparshatts and try a few. Or come along to the Hampshire Subaru club meet on Monday and talk to a few owners.
Branners
Jake, if its just you in the car going to work then try out an MR2. Its a lovely little car to drive (tiny compared to a supra so nipping in and out of traffic is easy), its quite fast and my automatic does pretty good fuel economy. That would be my recommendation if you want a daily driver. JB
Jake
I think a 6'2'' lard-arse like me would look a bit silly in a little car like the MR2 though.
JustGav
I think a 6'2'' lard-arse like me would look a bit silly in a little car like the MR2 though. Nah, my mate Ben is 6'10" and he sits just fine in the MR2 that he has... remember it is only a 2 seater, so the seats have a hell of lot of travel. If you want to try out an MR2, I'm sure he would be willing for you to try his MR2 NA Manual (which incidently is for sale *grin*)

DannyB
The first impreza you was about was the 2000awd, this is the UK model, as said only 215bhp, the slowest turbo, BUT its a Uk so cheaper insurance, fuel etc. Plenty good enough as a run around, But if you want more power a WRX at 240-260bhp or a STi at 280ish will be nice, but ive seen alot of these JAP engines that have had rebuilds etc! For a cheap run around the UK will be fine, easliy tuned to same spec as a wrx.
Branners
I think a 6'2'' lard-arse like me would look a bit silly in a little car like the MR2 though. I look small in an MR2, its quite flattering really considering how FAT I am. I even have the T-bar model so I can take most of the roof off and get sunburn on my bald patch. Its a perfect mid-life crisis car. Try one out Jake. Im out of work at the mo so could meet up somewhere if you want to try mine out.
