osso Posted November 22, 2004 Share Posted November 22, 2004 Can anyone tell me how the idle up valve connected to the power steering pump works? There are two nipples on the valve which is some how plumbed into the intake throttle body, is one nipple vacumed and the other nipple an outlet nipple? im just guessing here.. but i think this valve is the cause of my idle problems. I have noticed that when i move the steering wheel from idle the rpm dips right down from 450rpm to around 200rpm, until i stop moving the steering wheel and recovers to 450rpm.. I thought the purpose of this idle up valve was to increase the idle rpm when the power steering pump is operating? Cheers Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Ian C Posted November 22, 2004 Share Posted November 22, 2004 That valve lets air bypass the throttle plate when the wheel is turned - as the engine is under vacuum it merrily sucks in this sudden source of extra air and increases rpm, compensating for the power assistance the steering needs. osso Posted November 22, 2004 Author Share Posted November 22, 2004 Thx Ian, from that description it definitely sounds like there is a problem with my idle up valve on the power steering pump! the rpm is definitely not increasing as i turn the wheel, its dropping rpm. Any idea if it is a one way valve? meaning air can only go into one nipple and out the other nipple and not visa versa? could it be possible that the power steering pump itself not generating enough pressure to drive the idle up valve? i doubt this is the case because i dont really have a problem with the steering, just dipping rpm's Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
dude Posted November 22, 2004 Share Posted November 22, 2004 A guy in the states fitted a bleed valve in line with IUV to raise his idle , do a search on SF and you will find it James , BTW all this goes when you go single !!! osso Posted November 22, 2004 Author Share Posted November 22, 2004 I've seen the bleed valve mod, thats just allows you to increase the rpm, but it doesnt fix the problem with the valve itself. Or I'm missing a point It doesn't matter if it's one way or not, you'll either have a state of both sides at the same pressure (full throttle) or the plenum side is at a lower pressure than the intercooler side (vacuum), so the air through the valve will only ever travel towards the engine. -Ian Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Idle Mod I had a look at the power steering fluid this morning, it looks brown ish, im wondering whether to replace the idle up valve and flush the power steering fluid then use Dextron III (tranny fluid) What fluid should i be using for power steering? I've done a search on the USA forum, and people are saying you must use tranny fluid, and that using power steering fluid is a big no no. Ok i have a f plate supra turbo, the steering is really heavy as if its not working, i jacked it up to check all hoses ect and its all there. I checked the steering when i had jacked it up on one side and the power sterring worked. Does anyuone know what this can be as im looking to sell it and done want to witht that problem, i was told to bleed it but i dnt see that sorting it.
