Justin
Hi, How do I know when I need more than stock cooling. This is my situation: I'm thinking of getting a boost controller to take me between current 13 psi up to 18 psi because my supe still seems slow after removing the mid cat for an HKS pipe and fitting a Nur spec R exhaust. Do I also need to get a re-mapped ECU to sort the fueling out before fitting a boost controller? I'll probably need a fuel cut defenser too. Should I get ERL water injectors just in case I run too hot or is their a 'measurable indication' that shows you need extra cooling. Is it a case of not needing to buy any cooling mods until that indication happens? Please let me know your learned thoughts.
Branners
I would say if the max you plan on running is 18psi then you should be safe enough with stock cooling and fuelling. You will need a fuel cut defencer, and Pete Betts supplies a good one of those. My personal choice for enhanced cooling would be an uprated front mount intercooler. Im lazy with my cars and I prefer not to have to worry about whether the water injection pump has failed again, so with a FMIC its always there and always working. Flavio
Make sure you get a boost gauge as well. Preferably an analog one because it's easier to see or if you plan to use the boost controller as a boost gauge make sure it has a peak mode. If you're a gadget freak go for the Blitz iD Series otherwise get a simple HKS EVC boost controller. Flavio
Justin
Cheers JB. Cheers Flavio. I have a boost gauge already that is how I knew I needed more boost because I am running at only 13 psi
Nic
Justin I'd recommend the HKS EVC boost controller that Flavio mentioned. Simple to set up, small and easy to locate (mine is positioned in a hole cut where the trac and spoiler buttons use to be.) You can set two boost settings (high and low) and easily switch between the two on the move. It also has a 10sec scramble mode for those times you need that little bit more boost to really destroy anyone trying to take you on. I couldn't believe the difference in the speed the turbos spool up when I first got mine fitted, almost instant boost and I can now get the first turbo to over 1bar before the second comes on line. I would definitely go for the FMIC first though as JB recommended as it is very tempting once you have a boost controller fitted to get carried away with your settings. Justin
Nice one Nick. You're not anywhere near Wanchai are you? I was there not so long ago. Some bar called Coyote I think, full of us gueilos Anyway this HKS Boost controller how much did yours cost you? Can you have 3 settings? ie 1. OFF stock=boost, 2.=LOW setting 3.=HIGH setting. What does the high setting go up to?
Chris Wilson
Get rid of the first CAT too, it's the most restrictive one and will help the engine run cooler as well as make more boost with faster spool up. I stock pipes to mate up to your HKS second CAT removal pipe.
Nic
Justin I work accross the harbour in TST, I know Coyote's though, good party place Wanchai Yes the HKS EVC can be turned off so you can have 1. Off/stock boost 2. low boost setting, 3. high boost setting 4. Scramble mode. The max setting goes upto 2.5bar Sorry can't remember the cost. cheers
Guest Terry S
You won't get stock boost by turning the EBC off if you have removed the CATS.
Justin
I was going to leave the first cat in because: 1. Potentially my minimum boost could go up to an uncontrollable 22psi (danger!) Would need restrictor ring fitted 2. Hassle at MOT time 3. Noise 4. Couldn't decrease boost if needed (wet weather or when the missus is behind the wheel etc) By having a boost controller I can still reach what seems to be a safe maximum pressure (safe as in stock cooling) 18 psi and maybe pass an MOT with the first cat still in. I didn't realise removing it aided cooling though Chris that is interesting. I guess all that hot stuff trying to squeeze through the cat wouldn't have to hang around as long?
