Power Steering

yesterday i went to use the supra (been sitting a week) and when i started her up it was making a groaning sound and the steering was heavy then light on and off, checked the fluid and it was pretty low, so i drove to my local motor factors (only 1 mile down the road) and bought some Dexron 3 red transmission fluid as that was what they recomended. Topped up the fluid a small amount at a time untill it was up to the level, then took it for a drive.

The groaning went after a few miles so i pulled over and checked it again and finnished topping it up to the right level.

just gone out to the car to find this :(

had a poke round but can't really see where it's coming from, need to get her on a ramp really.

Any suggestions gladly welcomed

ah man, sorry hear about this. Check the hoses comming off the PS tank to make sure there are not leaks.

i've checkes as much as i can see, they look dry etc but there is some tiny cracks in them but i was told it's just the outer casing and considered normal.

need to get her on a ramp really

does anyone know the sizes and dimensions of all the power steering hoses? i might replace them anyway, there's a hydrolic place near me so i can just get everything i need but want to do this without pulling all the pipes off first

One of the most common culprits for steering fluid leaks is from out of the end of the steering rack, which is not a cheap fix.

bugger :(

what would that cost me Nic?

Jon establish where the leak is first before I shock you with a price for a new rack :faint: Check if there is oil coming from one of the rubber boots on the end of the rack.

It is possible to replace the seals in the rack, but they are suppose to be a bitch to do, it's usually cheaper to buy a good second hand steering rack.

Saying this it could be something simple.

ok i'll check it out tomorrow, but looking at the puddle on the floor it does look like it's coming out the centre and spreading out.

i don't mind the shock though if you want to price me up ;)

Pumps rarely leak, they either go noisy or low pressure. A leak on the pressure side of the rack hosing would normally see oil spraying all over the show. I suspect a rack leak, and a PROPER rack overhaul will always be many times more expensive than a good used rack, and still far inferior to a new rack. Out of curiosity, how much IS anew rack Nic?

cheers Chris, is it common for the hoses from the fluid res tank to have cracks? also did i use the right fluid?

i'm praying it's a hose

The high pressure side hose is something I have never seen fail, but a slight leak from hardened suction hoses is fairly common, it is not likely to dump that sort of quantity of fluid on the floor though. Any Dexron fluid should be OK and even the earliest type is unlikely to cause a sudden leak. I am afraid i suspect the rack, although a pump front shaft seal may cause a fairly substantial leak. Get the engine undertray off on a ramp and all should be obvious..
