madmunky
I have a intermitten rattle from my car and think ive tracked it down but not sure what it is (not good with cars really) The part making the noise is below the Cams, There is a silver round thing (technical i know) and this is whats making the noise, it only does it intermittenly when idlying or if you tad the throttle really lightly 1. Anyone else had this, easy/expencive fix? 2. What is the part called. Thanks for any help.

TrickTT
That is the auxillary belt tensioner. Not sure how much they are, but very easy to change. I'd do your belt at the same time.
madmunky
Thanks, there couldnt be anything this connects to also which would cause the problem
JODY T
No it just bolts to the block with 3 14mm bolts... it has a spring that puts tention on the AUX belt... Easy fix... Give me a shout if you need a good second hand one... Or for that matter a new one

madmunky
Has anyone had one of these make a rattling noise before, is it common problem with old ones? Just want to make sure this is the cause of the problem before i replace it.
Scooter
Has anyone had one of these make a rattling noise before, is it common problem with old ones? Just want to make sure this is the cause of the problem before i replace it. To check you could remove the aux belt, spin the tensioner wheel (to see if it feels knackered/worn) and if still unsure start the car and see if the noise is still there.......you do not want to run the car for long like this as the water pump alternator etc will not be working. (NB it could be one of these making the noise) You'll need a 14mm spanner, small hands and possibly someone else to make it easier to put back on...... Scooter
also if the noise is still there with no aux belt then it may be the cambelt tensioner/idler wheel which is just down and left of the tensioner you have circled......
madmunky
Thanks will check it out a little more before ordering bits
Matt _Aero top_
What was the out come of this as i think mines fooked it sounds like the bearing is breaking up
madmunky
Yeah its the auxillary belt tensioner, apparently quite common still yet to get mine fixed as it very intermittent on mine
Rob
also if the noise is still there with no aux belt then it may be the cambelt tensioner/idler wheel which is just down and left of the tensioner you have circled...... ..but hidden behind the cover, so you can't see it. Chris Wilson
If it has a steel pulley I can recon it with a new bearing, if that's making the noise (common), if it has a plastic one I can't. I have a car here that had a weird noise from it, turned out the casting was cracked and it needed a complete unit to fix it.
Matt _Aero top_
Chris is there any difference between N/A tensioners and TT'S , by this i meen the bearings in them as i think mine has a steel casing and would be able to press the bearing out myself at work . And don't suppose you know the numbers off the bearing do ya please .
Chris Wilson
AFAIK the steel type tensioner WHEEL is the same, the brackets (castings) differ manual to auto, maybe TT to N/A, too, not sure. The bearing number escapes me, but it's nothing too weird.
