Tig welding

Does anyone do this for work at all?

Im looking at getting a Tig welder and teaching myself how to weld with it. Only early stages of looking, and iv no idea how much they normally go for, so it may be a short-lived idea!!

I have a Mig welder but would like to use a Tig as it seems to produce a better weld line (did i just make that up?!)

Anyone who uses Tig welders at work that might consider selling me an old machine (that still works!) cheap for cash?!

Hey mate I have been tig welding for the past 8 years still learning at that, you will struggle to get a 240 volt set cheap that will weld ally and welding ally will be one of the hardest to do. im sure you could get a basic setup that will allow you to weld mild steel and stainless for a few hundred. might be worth doing a night coarse to learn the basics first. I started of gas welding to me they have the same pricible then moved onto tig welding

we have a 3 phase tig welder at work cost £1000 new, still learning. i normally mig weld so i don't get neat welds with the tig at the moment:rolleyes: but it seems that the guys at work who tend to gas weld are better tig welders than us mig welders. its all in the wrist action:d

Yeah, i get all my welding done at the college i work at for free but i feel like im putting the guy out so id rather not.

The college has 6 huge trailer mounted Tigs, they worked very well on some of the bits on my car, the guy was an artist with the welding torch.

I guess the Tig technique is similar to gas welding as you hold the filler in one hand and the 'torch/plasma tip' in the other...

Migatronic do some nice AC/DC machines that work off single pahse. The decent invertor machines are still very pricey, so if you find a good condition older Migatronic on Ebay like I did, it could be what you are looking for, but they need a hefty mains supply if you need to wind the current up full. I just don't practice enough, but I am 1/2 decent on ali and if I take the time to do proper purges stainless isn't as bad as it was, either ;) You need to practice, practice and practice and get the results vetted by an expert. There are some good welding forums though, where they don't laugh if you post up something that looks horrendous ;)
