Terminator
What are the causes,? Old dirty fluid or knackered pump? A little goblin or pixy hiding in the vicinity of the pump shaking a rattle?
Nic
Check fluid level first. Mine started whining a little when parking and gradually got louder over the course of 2 weeks before packing up completely. You'll know when it it gets bad as you'll feel it though the steering wheel. Had to get a new pump fitted on mine. cheers
Terminator
Cheers Nic, how much was the pump?
Flipfinger
Check it out (obviously) a few days after filling it up with the CORRECT viscosity fluid too. I had a leaky power steering fluid reservoir on a car I owned once, and could have been saved the (eventual) expense had I diagnosed the problem quicker. Nic
Phil Sorry I can't remember what the cost was, but I'm sure it wasn't cheap. I'd take Flips advice and see if changing the oil cures the problem first. cheers
Alex
They are over £300 for a new one...might be worth checking with a scrapyard before buying a new one. I use Mobil1 Dextron II ATF fluid in mine as that's what Toyota sold me!
Guest Martin F
There should be a refurb kit available, which includes seals and bearings, etc. I know there certainly is for the MKIII as i am just about to do it.
Terminator
Cheers guys I will pass this on to a friend. My pump is fine. Now I wish I had not said that.
Nic
Phil The pump I had fitted was a reconditioned one which was about half the price from memory, so Martin is probably right there probably is a refurb kit available for the pump. dil
My pumps been whinning for about a year now, i'm getting my cambelt changed in a weeks time , and i've been told that increasing the tension in the belt can cure it................
Guest Martin F
Your cam belt has nothing to do with your P\S pump. It's the auxillary belt in front of the cam belt that drives all the accessories. Increasing the tension may sort out the whining for awhile but going overspec will wear out the bearings quicker.
dil
i shall mention that when it goes in, the guy on the phone said something on the right hand side of where the cam belt area is needs tightening up, i'll post again once the jobs been done and let you know exactly what they tightened tensioned etc
Terminator
Plenty of info from you guys via messages e-mail and here, much appreciated. I think we have all solutions covered and planned now. Let you know how we go. BTW found a really easy way to check if noises are coming from the belt. Just pour a little water over the belt over the PS pulley. Instant silence if the noise is generated by the belt. If this is common knowledge why did no one tell me before?

Terminator
I checked my parts disc, but could not find a kit. Went to my local Toyota dealer and they could not find one either. It looks like the only way to go with a referb would be to pull it to bits and replace any fooked parts, if any are J-spec only then expect a 3-4 month wait. Guest Martin F
The refurb kit part number is 04446-30120, at least for a UK spec. Can't really see a Jap spec being any different.
Terminator
Thanks Martin, You know what T dealers are like had to give my details to get into the system. Can you see what you get in the kit.
Guest Martin F
From memory (as i'm at work now) it looks like the seals and front bearing.
Terminator
I think the fluid is being changed today, so we will see if that improves things, if not then the kit may be inorder. Thanks
