Is it worth changing this pipe?

see pic. is it worth changing / upgrading this to a metal one and placing the bov onto it? does it make a difference in performance and sound etc? im running stock jspec tubbies at the moment. the pipe needs changing anyway as its started bubbling etc. who does them and how do i fit a hks ssqv to it if i do? :search:

Hardpipes are more expensive, but are able to hold more pressure, the stock pipes can 'balloon' slightly under BPU pressures.

 

The location of the BOV won't make any difference (although if it is located on that pipe, you won't be able to hear it as loudly from the drivers seat, but pedestrians may), you've still got the same volume and pressure of air being released.

 

HKS do a hardpipe kit to replace all the stock pipes. Samco also do a silicon pipe kit to replace the stock pipes, these are available in different colours.

mines not ballooning, it just lookes like its got acne - lol. the rest of the pipes are getting old and brittle so thought i should change them before they go pop.

Yes true, I didn't mean to imply that it would.

 

When I had my stock pipes on, after going BPU I had one of the pipes blow off twice and also had a pipe split. The pipe split most likely from a combination of the increased pressure, the slight ballooning and the fact that the pipes become brittle over time due to the engine bay heat.

 

If Hiten needs to replace the pipe anyway, I'm guessing (would need to check prices first to confirm this), it'll be cheaper to replace with a Samco kit compared to new OEM parts.

 

I've never had a problem with hardpipes blowing off or splitting, for the 6 or so years I've been using them, so there would seem to be a benefit to having them when running higher than stock boost, though a decent kit isn't particularly cheap.
