Towing an Auto

Ok I know you must not tow an auto without the driving wheels off the ground but how far is it poss to tow an auto safely for a short distance.Anybody done it?

 

Hi i remember someone telling me you can tow an auto , but it must be in "N" and don't go over 30mph !! BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW FAR YOU COULD TOW !!

I towed mine about 2 miles once, in N of course and no faster than 30mph. 6 months down the line my autobox started slipping so I had to replace it. Whether towing it caused the failure I'll never know, could've been down to wear and tear or somthing else, but just thought I'd let you know :)

If it's RWD, disconnect the propshaft and you can tow it as far as you like. :)

 

As I understand it, the problem is that, if the engine is not turning the input shaft, the transmission fluid is not pumped around the gearbox.

 

same as lorrys and buses, they take the half shafts out of the rear axle and away they go:cool: a bit of a nuisense but works

I still reckon if you run the engine whilst towing there won't be damage. I'd like to try but I'm not gonna risk it.
Perhaps it would be a problem if the engine side was just ticking over but the wheel side was doing 40mph.

 

Suffolk to Oxfordshire is a long way to tow a car though, Craig. Have you found out how much it would cost to have it transported on a trailer or a recovery truck?
