Branners
Im thinking about getting a washing machine with the dryer function built in, but its going to be a fully integrated unit so it hides behind a door in the kitchen. Does anybody know if the dryer function of a washer dryer needs to be able to vent outside or if they can survive without that? JB
Alex
?Condensing? washer/dryers only need the waste water pipe as per a standard washing machine... I had one (Zanussi) and it worked very well...but you have to keep an eye on the filter, clean it once a week.
Pixelfill
Hi John, We've got an integrated washer dryer, and it has no provision for venting - so I guess not. Mike

JB some have vents on the front to avoid the need to vent through walls etc. i had a washer/dryer and found that the dryer took for ever and didn't really work - not to say they're all like that though. Also bear in mind there twice the chance of going wrong too. sorry to sound negative but i've not had much luck with.
Branners
its just that the dryer version of the washing machine is only £30 more so its worth having there for emergencies. We dont have a dryer at the moment and will always hang the clothes out to dry somewhere. thanks for the advice. I have asked the manufacturer to let me know for certain. (until you get the leccy bill)..... We use our dryer a lot as a mixture of crap weather and a new baby soiling everything in sight takes it's toll. Got our leccy bill this month and I feel like I've been rogered by an elephant! Didn't realise the new versions didn't need outside vents!! H. Branners
I talked to Hotpoint and they said that its a condensing unit and so does not need to vent outside. So I tracked down the best price on the Hotpoint BWD129 and then got Dixons to do their online price match and its being delivered on Wednesday. Saved myself over £100 by using http://www.pricerunner.co.uk to find the best price and Dixons will even match online prices. JB
Class One
As it's a condenser unit, it'll probably have a drip tray that'll need emptying once in a while, good for watering house plants etc. Have to say though, having had a combination washer/dryer I'm not a fan and went back to a Bosch washing machine and the dryer is in the garage. ( bunch of blokes talking about the merits of washer/dryers. All new men of the 21st century. )
Branners
I doubt I could fit a dryer anywhere else so its probably the only option I have. My wife flatly refuses to get a dryer and so I doubt it will be used that much. JB

Alex
Condensers should eject all water out the waste pipe.
SimonB
I've got a Hotpoint one, works pretty well although it does take ages. I only use it in emergencies when I've forgotten to wash something I need to wear anyway. You can hear the pump run to get rid of the water down the wastepipe when the dryer is working. supRo
Hotpoints are the worst (Source: Dixons group Coverplan manager!) Try and stick to German brand like Bosch. Having two units is inefficent so clothes take longer to wash/dry and more fuel bill!
Sharpie
Have to say though, having had a combination washer/dryer I'm not a fan and went back to a Bosch washing machine and the dryer is in the garage. Yep, same here. I'm not a fan of condensing dryers either as the build up of damp heat caused a lot of condensation in the room we had it in

Having two units is inefficent so clothes take longer to wash/dry and more fuel bill! We would have loved to have gone to a Bosch unit but with the prices starting at about £550 for an integrated unit we paid £347 for the Hotpoint. I can accept some unreliability if its nearly half the price. The Which site did say the hotpoints are unreliable but Im happy to take the chance.
