FMIC question... removing tha heat!

Ok, here's a question.

3 rails tend towards the £1000 mark, and 2 rails can be almost half this... for 500 bhp do you REALLY need a 3 rail? Seems to me ppl buy a lot of oversized FMIC's that won't really be used.

Comments/suggestions? I'm debating which to upgrade to, y'see, and there's no point going past 500 bhp if you wanna be able to DRIVE the thing regularly :D like commutable. for a car like this you DON'T worry about the fuel... up to a reasonable point!

True - the turbos are capable of up to 1.4 bar, I'm upgrading to 1.3 to be safe (head gasket well in mind here).

with the planned ecu upgrade and running 1.3 bar permanently with bigger injectors I think I'll be easy at 500 bhp without problems (after a rolling road of course) but the FMIC is a concern, it need 'grading as well... and if it doesn't need a huge one I won't bother just for the look of it!

really? That makes me think all the more that a 3 rail is possibly unnecessary.

Perhaps he can contribute? :p I'll email I think... he did good work on my friend Mike's Supra and I hear he's like the pre-eminent supra guru.

It's not RAILS it's ROWS. :)

Moving on...Dude is mainly geared up for drag runs and so needs to save the weight. In normal road trim with the boost turned down he probably doesn't quite out run the ratings for the 2Row.

In the UK we can probably get away with thinner ones but it can't hurt to have a bigger FMIC.

I'd fit a 3ROW to mine, to allow for a hot track day...but that's me :)

Paul Whiffin has these two on his site :-

Greddy R-SPL 2 row MK4 JZA80 twin turbo £790

Greddy V-SPL 2 row MK4 JZA80 twin turbo £660

Chris Wilson sells his uprated side mount for approx £500.

Would be good to see some more info on the new Greddy 2 row units.

Some info from Greddy :-

V-Spec. Core

Depending on the application and usage, some turbocharged set-ups require different flow characteristics. To add to our tuning choices, GReddy developed the V-spec. line of intercooler cores with an inner "Micro Grove Tube" design. This design was developed to allow for larger cores that give good cooling with a more free flowing internal core. This is ideal for applications with low to medium-high boost levels in factory turbocharged engines or normally aspirated engines with bolt-on turbo kits.

R-Spec. Core

GReddy R-Spec. cores feature a high heat-dissipating "Inner fin" design. This is ideal for medium to high boost levels on higher horsepower or upgraded turbo engines. The larger internal surface area provides superior cooling efficiency for radiating excessive heat and minimizing heat soak. Some R-spec. kits are labeled "HG" or High Grade; these kits feature piping and end tanks that have been hand-polished to a mirror finish for the ultimate in show quality aesthetics.

The Blitz one can be had for around £800, is bigger than the Greddy 3 row (slightly) and comes complete with all the pipes and other bits. Only snag is you have to trim the hole where it goes through the drivers side wing slightly, but it's easy enough. It was an easy decision for me.

IMO guys the 3 rows are not very efficient as the middle row just gets heated by the front and rear row (same as a radiator does) , mine is 600x300x100 with turbolators even doing 3 back to back top speed runs there was no drop in power at all , i can have a 3 row made but it is massive , around 150mm thick !!!!!

I think the IC needs to be around the 100mm thick to do the job , i just dont see the 3 row being that efficient compared to a similar sized 2 row , the Greddy will prob be fine for a normal sized single !!!;)
