michael
Noticed a local trader selling this... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130146530911 Could you just get it aligned and tape a tarpaulin over the front until you can afford to repair it properly? Gazboy
It'd probably be cheaper to buy a straight 05 GT3, if this car was £15k then it's worth a punt, but I've just found two 05's for £46 & 48k, plenty of them for £55k. Also factor in that you'd have to sell this thing below book as it's cat D when you want to move on.

I see Jazz you are still fulfilling duties as the forums pet idiot.
Stevie Boy
Looks like a good buy for a reshell if it was a bit cheaper, wouldn't fancy trying to straighten out the front end of that one. Buy new or find nice a nice straight 996 shell, swap majority of bits except A/C and carpets over and go for a more stripped out "Supercup" style GT3, would be lush. Hmmm, shame whatever i'd ever be able to offer wouldn't even come remotely close to his starting bit!

DaveK
Exactly what I was thinking, isn't that engine worth about £40k? Surely not that much? If you can pick up decent GT3s for £50K, then that would make the rest of the car worth only £10K.

I'm always looking at other things, mainly for learning purposes, I don't think I'll be buying a GT3 just yet That one just popped up on my daily search for local people selling cheap cars on eBay. You can pick up a decent Supra for £8k, because a new engine from Toyota would set you back £8k doesn't mean the rest of the car is worthless. I'm sure Stevie could say for sure, but I'm certain a GT3 engine is the thick end of £40k new from Porsche.

Gazboy
It's not new though is it? How do you value something that (legitly) almost never comes up for sale second hand?
DaveK
How do you value something that (legitly) almost never comes up for sale second hand? I'm sure a breaker would manage it. To be honest - given that you can buy an entire undamaged car for £50K I'm damn sure you wouldn't get £40K for the engine. I would expect more like £20K at a guess. Gazboy
If that was the case we'd be knee deep in GT3 engined Caymans. Tell you what, ask the seller of the ebay ad how much he'd sell you the engine, ancilleries and ecu for (I would but I don't have an account). I've just looked in all the usual 911 forums/websites/retailers and can't find any kind of GT3 engine for sale, new, second hand or refurbed. That doesn't mean that a second hand one is worth the same amount as a new one. PS : Your logic about GT3 engined caymans is flawed anyway. Do you really think that people who buy Caymans have £20K spare for an engine? If so - why would they buy a Cayman in the first place? Gazboy
Supply and demand Dave, it's why we have garages in London changing hands for £100k in west London, the simple fact is GT3 engines rarely come up for sale. My original question to Stevie was about "a" GT3 engine, not this one, I just worded it badly, but as you picked up on it I thought I'd look to see what these units change hands for, the thing is they hardly come up for sale. There also seems to be a market for putting 3.6 Carrera engines, X50 turbo engines and supercharging 3.4 cayman engines to suggest there are plenty of Cayman owners who do have £20k spare. I know what your saying mate. Bit of a tough call for price on that, could confirm with the parts dept when i'm back to work next week. We usually rebuild the engines unless the failure caused damage to majority of components in the engine, then we'd get a replacement engine from Porsche on an exchange basis. Off the top of my head a normal 996 with watercooled M96 engine normally go for bout £8k on exchange basis. With the 964/993 crankcase based GT3 engines with all that high revving magnesium/titanium gubbins i'd imagine a replacement engine on exchange basis would be in the region of early to mid £20k. Engines are normally only replaced under some form of warranty so never really pay too much attention to how much they cost as Porsche foot the bill. TBH of all the numerous actual exchange/replacement engines i've come across over the years majority have all been Boxtser/996 water cooled engines, 3xCayenne engines and 1x997 Turbo engine (which only had a porous crankcase which would normally have been rebuilt but as it were a brand spankin new model at the time Porsche wanted it back) So on the basis that you'd probly only be able to source a lump like that from a written off model (unless you knew some people in Stuttgart) as there on usually on an exchange unit basis, it could be considered gold dust and probly fetch near enough new replacement cost ie early £20k perhaps.
