RedM
As my car clunks like nothing I've ever driven I figured I'd seek advice about getting the following done. Full suspension refresh a la Ianc http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=119349 plus all wheel bearings, driveshafts, hub flanges, hub bearings, etc etc. Basically, the car is to be a daily driver for the next few years (she ain't worth selling) and I want her to drive properly. Is it worth doing? If so, how much (I'm guessing 3k) and where can I make savings? Cheers
RobSheffield
It will be worth doing Martin, and i suppose you could make it 'feel' cheaper by doing it bit by bit over the winter.

As I don't have the facilities or know-how to do it I'll have to pay a man to do it.
RobSheffield
That is true. but i meant 'buy' the parts in bits. Can YVS do the work for you?

Guest Chumpalot
I would say it's worth doing. Definitely. Mine clunks too, both when cornering and pulling away. Not sure what it can be but I'm remedying the problem by getting her some new suspension, bushes and bearing. Ian C's opened my eyes somewhat as to what could be going on under the car, I'd rather have a car that handles as new than spend it on blingy bits. Nic
Not a cheap job, but the results were well worth it, best money I have ever spent on my car.
Soonto_HAS_soop
I wouldn't bother with your hub bearings and wheel bearings, you can check these before replacing them, and they are unlikely to make a clunking noise. Things I would look at are: (All prices plus fitting) R2 bushes and fitting - $450 + Fitting is not an easy job Rear Subframe Mounts - £200 Front Subframe Bolts - £40 Diff Mounts - £100 Drop Links Front and Rear - £125 Anti Roll Bar Mounts - £60 Get the Subframe Bolts Torqued up - Free This would be the first step I would consider before looking at the more mechanical sections you mentioned. All prices are a bit of a guess, but you can always phone Mr T for them. The Anti Roll Bar Mounts are simple to change yourself too, so that would save a little cash. R2 Racing bushes are a pain in the butt, and I have heard of Garages refusing to fit them as they are a complete crapper. Other option is to change all the arms to include new ball joints, but that means Mr T items, and that will not be overlycheap, something that Nic used to be able to aource though. HTH. Dave222
Martin Surely the best thing to do is spend a little having the actual problem diagnosed, then fix that rather than changing everthing.
VIL
Red/Chumpalot, dont know if it helps but mine clunked with the best of them, especially on slow turns, pulling away or pulling up on the drive etc. Like you I had a whole list of potentential causes and was prepared for the worst....although on the ramps the mechanics found nothing lose, no subframe bolts etc so they could not find the cause....however as part of the list of work I had all the pads changed and all the clunking has gone! The sounds coming off the front end I would never have attributed to pads alone but so far so good!!! I would seriously look at this first...I know it sounds mad that the pads could make so much noise..... but it could be a cheap starting point! (note the pads I took out where EBC `green` dont ever use them they are rubbish)
colsoop
I did the bushes replacement route before (with poly ones) and it still highlighted issues with the handling, wobbling over slow speed lumps in the road etc. Don't get me wrong it is a massive improvement on what it was but if i had my time again i would get the new arms and diff bushes isntead of going the poly route. i paid around £1200 from nic for the front and rear arms + a few other bits, there were still a ferw more bits i could get but these were the main parts. Fitting i don't know how much it is going to be yet but i have budgeted around £800. Including a proper wheel alignment afterwards. I also refreshed the rear bearings last year and the front bearing last month, once the suspension parts are fitted i will be a happy man again and can do the track days i have promised myself Edit: my car has done 96k
michael
Martin Surely the best thing to do is spend a little having the actual problem diagnosed, then fix that rather than changing everthing. Spot on, yes it would be nice to completely refresh the whole of the suspension but in the short term it's far more cost effective to have someone in the know highlight the specific issues and fix those. Spend the savings on your stem seals, wheels or BPU to rekindle your Supra enjoyment.

Chiefgroover
Question you need to ask yourself - Whats going to go next after all this is done? are you willing to keep throwing money at it if it does? and will it really make much difference to the resale value? The choices - sell and move on OR take a chance your not on the slippy slope to more and more bills over the next year or so?. Might be cheaper to buy a fresher one in the long run? RedM
Spend the savings on your stem seals....... You could be right seeing as the oil level light has come on after just 2800 miles!
Ian C
Well the stem seals is about £120 of seals and an oil change, and maybe £50 on tools if you haven't got them already. If you do it yourself of course Having just driven to Surrey and back this weekend I've thoroughly enjoyed my car, it's great to drive especially as I've spent some time twiddling with the shock stiffness settings to get them as soft as possible without it starting to feel less solid. A decent suspension place can bung it up on a ramp and crowbar stuff about to see if there is any play, get that done. If it is problematic, bite the bullet and swap the lot, they are all the same age -Ian
Matt _Aero top_
I'm in the same place at the moment reguarding the suspension , i think i'm going to take it to someone like chris wilson or miami-gt to let them have a look and see what i need to buy . Matt you said "i've been bit by the supra bug good and proper i can't get enough of them but i made the mistake of buying a N/A coz of money issues but one day i will be a tt owner or better still a single owner " in another thread so if you really want a TT you should put aside whatever money you are thinking of paying for suspension on your NA for the future TT. My point is if you think buying an NA was a mistake spending lots more on it is another and IMO even bigger mistake.

Indeed i did say that but untill i buy a tt or a single i can't leave the sup with suspension that is slowly begining to deteriorate , especially when its an everyday driver to. georigg
Matt, Interesting comments re clunking coming off the suspension. I have a non turbo JZA80 Aero which clunks from both front and back and am just about to replace the stock Jap dampers for UK spec ones as I find the ride too hard(used to have a UK spec a long time ago). I will do a good check on the pads, front and back, but only after changing out the dampers just to check if that change change makes any difference. I will post separately with a review of the damper change .....hopefully next week-end. Rgds Georigg
