MarkR
Anyone have a pic of the front decat pipe in a VVTI from underneath? I want to do this tomorrow so any hints would be good.
MarkR
Does the 1st cat have a sensor on it or anything that I'd have to refit to the decat pipe?
Chris Wilson
No sensor, easy job *IF* the cat nuts on the turbo elbow casting come undone OK, and don't seize. If they do you'll wish you'd farmed the job out! I have more success undoing them when everything is stone cold, with lots of penetrant spray, but it's a lottery. MarkR
Thanks Chris. I'm not driving it before doing the job (I picked up some exhaust assembly paste tonight so the exhaust wouldn't be hot tomorrow- far too sensible of me). I also bought some WD40 to hopefully loosen stuff up (wishful thinking probably). How long do the socket extensions have to be? Is it far in? What size are they? I guess I could figure this out myself. Just being lazy.
Nic
Not VVTi, but there are some pics here http://mkiv.com/techarticles/downpipe_pics/stock_cats/index.html
JohnA
WD40 is not that good as a penetrant. Try PlusGas
MarkR
Cheers... too late now. Gonna start in a few mins..

MarkR
Thanks... just went downstairs and realised the axle stands are at the mother in laws house. This is gonna suck. I don't want to drive the car (heat from exhaust before working on it..ouch) but have no stands. Must find a replacement!
RobSheffield
This doesn't sound like its going well! Im doing a second decat, so we can compare notes and/or injuries after
R Black
So i take it you dont need gaskets to do this just paste right? P.S. goodluck you brave soul
MarkR
I have gaskets for the other pipes but apparently it's better to use the paste at the turbo end (Chris Wilson advised me to do this) The 2nd decat was easy, except I had to angle grind the bolts off cos they were stuck. Luckily I had spares Just called a mate to bring around some axle stands. Let the games commence I've also just put the std BOV back on to see if it makes any difference to my richness. Forgot to take a rag downstairs, was full of grease, and the phone rang. Don't you just hate that!

Sandy-m2
Cool, will PM hime, cheers. (p.s. how much for your brake setup?)
MarkR
PM me. It's a mate who did it and it depends on if you supply the parts etc. I gave him some stuff in exchange (carbon fibre genuine supra steering wheel etc) and some money and supplied the parts, so it worked out cheaper than the UK spec ones. Stops very well.
MarkR
Just finished the turbo timer...piece of cake... off to get axle stands
MarkR
Today didn't go as well as planned. Got the first bolt off, no hassle Got the second bolt loose, no probs, Couldn't move the third, and snapped my universal joint on my socket set in the process. Figured I'd go back to bolt no 2 and then see if I could loosen the cat up a bit with only one bolt on it, and hopefully get no 3 off in the process. Only one problem! Bolt 2 was coming off fine, until halfway when the stud decided it wanted to come out too, so i put everything back on and am going to get someone to do it for me. I don't want to risk breaking off the stud or locking it up somehow. Nightmare. Who'd have thought 3 little nuts were so much hassle. Sandy-m2
doh! thinking this might not be a DIY job now.
JohnA
These studs snapping off: not exactly unheard of! Drill it out and fit a new one. When I needed to do mine I decided to have it done on a lift, as drilling snapped studs laying on my back stopped being fun years ago. MarkR
Not the easiest lying on your back in the street. Will attempt to get it done tomorrow.. Will let you know how I get on.

merckx
If you do snap any studs, the turbo elbow came off very easily on my car.
MarkR
Thanks, that's a small relief, touch wood not snapped yet. My mate rebuilds supras and skylines for a living (and has a supra engined hilux complete with suspension, abs, ecu, dash etc all done by him ) so he's going to have a look for me. Hopefully it'll be okay.
