KKMMK2N
Can anyone let me know what the box in the pics is, what it is for and why it may have been bypassed? Any help would be appreciated (UK-spec TT). Ian.

Guest Chumpalot
I'm not sure. I do know that your engine bay could do with a clean though.
heckler
I think its the pre-spool vsv for the 2nd turbo. I've done the same to mine as I had an issue with pre-spool coming on late.
KKMMK2N
Thanks Heckler, what symptoms were you getting with your pre-spool problem? Engine bay is clean as a whistle, dirt is on the camera lens.....ahem
baldy
that is the prespool mod aparently bypassing gives better midrange torque mine has been running like this for years with no probs
jazz1
what have you done to the engine, have you sprayed it?
Fifty
what have you done to the engine, have you sprayed it? looks like he sprayed it with the dirt off the underside of yours Rich
Homer
that is the prespool mod aparently bypassing gives better midrange torque mine has been running like this for years with no probs Wonder what the trade off is Toyota designed it with prespool for a darn good reason. hadyn
Erm, having those hoses disconnecting to the vsv, wouldnt that cause the 2nd turbo to not come on at all?
charleshmlee
That is the VSV bypass because you must have an electronic boost controller installed that requires to do that.
heckler
That is the VSV bypass because you must have an electronic boost controller installed that requires to do that. no it doenst. that VSV has nothing to do with a BC. But you do bypass one of the VSV on the front by no 1 turbo.
heckler
Thanks Heckler, what symptoms were you getting with your pre-spool problem? Engine bay is clean as a whistle, dirt is on the camera lens.....ahem No 2 was coming on later and later. I bypassed the VSV so as soon as enough boost was produced by no 1 - no 2 would natually pre-spool. been like for a year now.
jazz1
looks like he sprayed it with the dirt off the underside of yours Rich id be crying if mine was like that:blink:
heckler
Erm, having those hoses disconnecting to the vsv, wouldnt that cause the 2nd turbo to not come on at all? nope - its just bypassed. The pre-spool is connected drirectly to an air feed.
KKMMK2N
Right folks, I was sort of hoping that this post would lead to a bit more interest in the vsv bypass issue rather than the state of my engine bay....! Anyway, yes the engine has suffered from overspray during a front wing repair and is covered in a layer of dusty crap and paint flakes as a result. No big deal, I promise it'll be cleaned at some stage. Heckler knows what he is talking about - I don't have a boost controller fitted and the second turbo works fine. A previous owner must have done the bypass mod for a reason and I'm guessing it was done as part of the vsv mod to minimise the dip in power just before the second turbo comes online (I have since found details of this mod on other posts). I haven't driven another TT so I don't know if it makes any difference or not but now that I know what has been bypassed and that others have also seen it done I think I'll leave it as it is. If anyone knows of any downside to this please let me know, cheers Heckler for your help, I'm off now to clean my engine bay! Ian.
JohnA
I'd put it back the way it is supposed to be because you are compromising the prespooling of turbo#
