charlieboo
Can someone please tell me if the plug that connects to the oil level sensor comes directly from the main loom or is it some sort of extention lead?
georigg
The plug comes off the main loom the wire goes back to the indicator light on the right hand light pod, right of the speedo/rev dials. Looking at the engine oil system diagram, the "oil level sensor" appears to be a similar sensor to the oil pressure sensor. The level sensor is fitted in the oil system between the sump pick-up and the oil pump and the oil pressure sensor comes off the oil gallery between the pump and the oil filter. On this basis, it does not appear to be a genuine "level sensor" indicating oil level in the sump. rgds Georigg

I wouldn't trust it though, and consider it a waste of time, you can't beat the old dipstick.

I found it very useful when my front main seal went, if i hadn't spotted the level light, the next thing i would have seen would have been the low oil pressure light, and then it would have been to late:( So now i have a super bright LED wired into the level sensor;)
robin
It has to be better then no warning. Alot of the new BMW's dont have a dipstick which is just crazy.
Thorin
The oil level does need to be very low for it to come on, so I wouldn't rely on it. Can't beat regular checks.
Tricky-Ricky
I certainly wouldn't advocate it as an oil level indicator for when to top up, but as a extra fail safe, its a dam good idea;)
charlieboo
Thanks for replies. I have refurbed my loom (off the car) and when refitting it, I lost said connector. Turned out I had threaded it up through the intake runners towards the intake manifold by mistake. Found it after a few hours of head scratching. All sorted now.
