Yeh ditto the above - Metallica S&M was tame IMO. Some of their other stuff is much heavier.

I hate all this categorising that goes on anyway - no way could i put a lot of bands into their relevant sections without someone saying I was wrong.

I was going to put a long list of bands now, but I've decided against it - too many people would argue LOL

Sod it, I'm going to do a short list anyway....

The following bands came up on last.fm when I searched for bands like Metallica, and suprisingly I like most of them :D...... :

Mudvayne

Lacuna Coil

Iron Maiden

Megadeath

Machinehead

Rob Zombie

Marylin Manson

Soulfly

Pantera

Disturbed

System of a Down

Slayer

KoRn

Sepultura

EDIT: Why don't you install Last.fm (http://www.lastfm.com) and type in the band you like the sound of, it'll give you LOADS of ideas for other similar sounding bands/music - just like the above list!

Hellyeah, Rob Zombie, Sirenia (if you like female vocalists like Evanescence), Within Temptation (female again), Machine head, Shadows fall, In Flames, Staind,

I could go on for ages.

ta, yeh got stuff from evenescence, staind. will search out the rest although didnt like Luciana Coil you rec'd. vocal to up/down/up/down for my liking..

Based on the above have you considered Michael Bolton and Curtis Stigers?

Beyond that try http://www.pandora.com for help, your selection above doesn't really scream "metal", it's a bit lighter, more generic rock.

If you like the pop stuff give Paramore a go.

hmm Metalica are a ROCK band you say http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metalica

.... first ive EVER heard them called a rock band lol. reason i like that album in particular is for the contrast of metal along with an orchastra.

actually seether are a post grunge band, fi you ant to split hairs over whats rock and whats metal... mr music man lol :p

will try lastfm.. ta

Metallica stopped being a metal band after the black album. And Justice was the best thing they did, then Lars just lost it; his drumming on S&M was awful and I won't even mention St Anger.

As for real metal bands, I'll add to the list (in no particular genre order):

Lamb of God

Pantera

Motley Crue

Dream Theater

Helloween (early stuff was better)

Overkill

Tankard

Children Of Bodom

Trivium

Anthrax

M.O.D

Exodus

Alice Cooper

Suicidal Tendencies

Napalm Death

Bolt Thrower

Carcass

Exhorder

Vio-Lence

Testament

Love/Hate

W.A.S.P

Xentrix

Warlock

Voivod

Celtic Frost

Cathedral

Annihilator

Anvil

Bad Religion

Candlemass

Dimmu Borgir

Death

Gang Green

Grip Inc

Mastadon

Morbid Angel

Sacred Reich

Saxon

Scorpions

Judas Priest

Soundgarden

Any more...?

Good choice, sir. Psalm 69 rocks. I'll have to have a look for the new album...

Downloaded it last night, only had a quick listen and was quite pleased. There's also a remix version of the album which is much more heavily sample based and industrial.

Also if you like Linkin Park, check out Fort Minor its a side project of one of the vocalists, the oriental looking one that raps. More of a rap album than a metal album but damn good none the less.

He's not really oriental looking mate, are you not thinking of the dj?

Mike Shinoda looks like this:

Animal!! Were you into Xentrix??

Our Kristian (Stan) Havard was the lead guitarist.......

H.

Y'know, for some reason I was actually gonna ask you a while ago if you were related. Small world.

Been into Xentrix since they were Sweet Vengeance - Chris used to work at Dutton Forshaws with my dad, and gave him a demo tape (still got it - Nobody's Perfect is a bitchin track). Shattered Existence is still one of my all time favourite thrash albums.

Not seen your Kris for years; last time was at a bike rally playing with Men In Black. I'll never forget seeing him bombing around on that TZR250, he made it look like a toy, lol. [edit] Forgot, last time was when they played Preston last year.

hmm Metalica are a ROCK band you say

Read it again brainiac, at no point did I say Metallica are a rock band, what I was saying was that the particular example album chosen is possibly their "lightest" release to date, it's a fine album but it's not metal. The tracks from it are in their raw form but the classical adaptation takes the edge off things, it's a much more commercial release, more rock... hence my comment.

actually seether are a post grunge band, fi you ant to split hairs over whats rock and whats metal... mr music man lol :p

Call them what you like Mr Wikipedia, the Cheeky Girls are post-grunge if you want to start splitting hairs, I have Karma and Effect and I've heard their other stuff, it's mainstream, it's acoustic, it contains ballads, it's radio friendly - again I'm not slating them for this, just passing on my own thoughts, they aren't "metal".

It seems like you want fairly mainstream guitar music, 3 Doors Down, Audioslave, Stone Sour, Godsmack, Stone Temple Pilots, Three Days Grace, Incubus, Armour for Sleep, Matchbook Romance, Foo Fighters, Bush... like I said earlier Paramore are easy on the ears, even the emo stuff like Panic! at the Disco, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, AFI, Alexisonfire, The Used, Funeral for a Friend might do it for you.

Right now I'm on random play with Coheed and Cambria, Atreyu, Bullet for my Valentine, Static-X, Wolfsbane, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Killswitch Engage, System of a Down, 36 Crazyfists, KoRn and your non-rock Metallica - some of them might interest you but I don't feel they fit in with what you've given above, sorry about that, I was trying to work to the info given.

This is where MySpace comes in handy, find the bands you like then find the bands other people who like them have on their friends lists, the Pandora link I posted used to be handy too, the last.fm thing sounds like it's doing much the same but probably in a less restrictive way... anyway good luck with the music search and your continued belief in Wikipedia as the bible of all things ;)
