As bad as speeding or dangerous driving?

My local village has a cash machine which is situated adjacent to a zebra crossing. Last week i parked up to get some cash out, parcially on the yellow lines behind but predominantly on the zig zag markings, not quite adjacent to the machine as thats where the actually crossing is. a copper drove past as i was getting back in the supra and he pulled up as a i drove off.

Anyway, got a letter through from the pigs on Saturday requesting the name of the driver who committed the offence of parking of on a zebra crossing's zig zags. Looked up the offence on the net and its punishable by 3 points and a fine!!!!

So kinda takes the piss really when you consider what else is endorsable by 3 points and a fine!! typical of my luck.

Pedestrians have priority at a zebra crossing. Blocking the view with a parked car leads - potentially - to a pedestrian being hit. Especially kids who (should be) encouraged to use crossings.

I think it's just as dangerous as speeding.

So you never parked on double yellows, or a single yellow dropping off a DVD or cash machine, they are there for the same reason! stop people parking in dangerous locations!

Nope Matt Zig Zags are not the same as double yellows. That's why parking on them gives you 3 points and a £60 point fine.

There are there to protect pedestrians using a crossing, who at the end of the day have more rights to be on a road than a motorist.

Back in the days when I was a uniformed Patrol officer, I would have had no qualms about doshing out an endorsable Fixed penalty for any zig zag offence, especially to cabbies who always seemed to like stopping on the approach of a crossing to drop/collect their fare.

Easy pickings.

As my nan was hit by car because of someone like you parking on zebra crossing blocking the view of other drivers, I find it hard to have sympathy.

It seems one of those stupid ones until someone you know gets hit by a car and you realise why its there.

Annoying though to recieve, Id be annoyed with myself for picking up 3 easy points!

Nope Class 1 i know of places far worse to park around my area which are guarded by double yellow lines which i would never dream of parking. for instance a junction head is just as bad, its where all the dropped crossing are for people to cross, and where obviously motorist need to see before pulling out.

Time to re-read this - http://www.highwaycode.gov.uk/18.htm

I've been meaning to do it myself - it ought to be enforced everyone reads it annually.

Someone I know got done for overtaking a bit before a keep left section so he just about went over the white diagonal lines that you get fanning out before them in the middle of the road. I thought that was harsh.

Areas with white diagonal stripes or chevrons are to keep traffic lanes apart or to protect any traffic that is turning right. If the area has a border of a broken white line, you shouldn't go into the area unless it is necessary and you can see clearly that it is safe for you carry out the manoeuvre.

N.B: If the area has diagonal stripes and is bordered with solid white lines you should not go into it. If the area is marked by chevrons, you must not enter it (unless in an emergency).

I also got done by an undercover car for crossing unbroken white lines when i was entering a motorway 3 years ago, must of only been a few metres from crossing the broken section. Thing is, driving cars like a modded supra and a the car i had previously coppers are crying out for reasons to pull you over and do you.

Yeah - and I speed too. That's not the point.

The point is - it's just as dangerous.

I have a question.... why is nothing done about double parking, in the streets next to my old flat - its a wide road so you have people parking on each side and then every second car alternating has someone double parked. this is in a city center, highly pedestrian zone. yet no one ever did anything about it.

you would end up zig zaging in and out of cars with other people doing the same coming towards you - then throw kids and pedestrians into the mix. i just couldn't understand why you could do that put if your parked on a double line at midnight you would get a ticket(this did happen)

Parking on the approach to junctions is also an offence, as is also leaving your car in a dangerous position or parking on a verge where there are double white lines in the centre of the carriageway.

You may feel in your opinion that what you did was not as bad as speeding or dangerous driving, but the fact of the matter is, is that you commited an offence, and it doesn't matter what time of day it was or whether someone was using the crossing or not, just the same as speed limits, they are there all the time, and whilst you may not agree with it, that's the way it goes.

Well thats just the thing isnt it. They are there all the time, and so they should be to allow interpretation by the copper as to whether a ticket or a warning is justifiable. On a particular occasion in the past, ive been stopped for exceeding the speed limit up in Presotn. but the copper that stopped me jsut gave me a warning after saying its not that bad at this time at night because theres no one around. had it been in the day when things are busier im sure it would have been a different matter.

A little bit of interpretation wouldnt have gone a miss instead of just going at it blankey. thats a poor outlook Class one, hope you dont look so blankly on every case you work on

Same reason that 96 mph on a motorway is viewed as more serious than 49 in a 30 limit?

Doug is one of the most balanced and fair people I've ever met.

I suspect like most Police Officers it all boils down the the attitude of the person they're dealing with.
