AEM Wideband - Free air Calibration

Does anyone know if you can recalibrate these units as have only seen one unit that is even close to my innovate wideband or my Vems wideband at present. All others are just way out

 

Mapped a car on saturday that had one fitted and was reading 13:1 on AEM and then on my innovate i was seeing 11.7:1

(aem was in downpipe and innovate was using exhaust clamp)

 

I was so confused i used a brand new sensor and free air calibrated and got exactly the same figures as before on innovate and vems

 

Another example supra i have mapped i see 11.5:1 on my innovate wideband and then their aem shows 10:1.

 

And theres mores

 

So is there anyway to recalibrate these gauges or are they just another flashing paper weight

Not sure about the Guage type units but I know with the controller type you had to have good earth and batt feed, when used with the aem ECU there is a gain adjustment which you calibrate the unit to with the sensor unplugged.

You can't calibrate the gauge type as it's done at the factory, and has a specific resistor fitted to give the correct output to the gauge. It's explained in the instructions.

How many do you think you've seen incorrect? If it's a lot then this is quite a serious problem for AEM, and perhaps they should be informed....

 

Jamie, it sounds like you were suffering from the old ECU not seeing the same value as the gauge problem. Mines the same, it reads off by half a point. It can be corrected by changing the calibration.

Well the only aem gauge i have ever seen be close to my innovate was yours tony and a friends of jamiep's. But the rest i have looked at havn't even been close. A big difference.

 

I never fit these for people and never use them if already fitted for when im mapping a car as have no faith in them.

 

The switch on the back are for configuring output type but never touch them as dont use the wideband for mapping

Out of all the cars I've been involved with only two haven't had an AEM and they have all behaved themselves. I know Smarty had a sensor let go a while back, and I know they vary on how far into the rich region they can actually read. Some differences of 0.1 to 0.2 I'd understand but reading 13's instead of 11's seems a bit dubious. Was it just not a one off broken unit?

Just had another thought. It could have been a serial display gauge rather than a gauge type wideband.

 

The serial gauge will display outputs from the ECU. If the calibration in the ECU is to cock, then what is displayed on the gauge will be too.

unfortunatly not ian have seen 2 now that have been way out in the past monthes as is pretty scary espically if there reading rich when its wrong and you lean it out.

 

Do you use your own wideband for mapping ian or use a customers if in place?

Ryan i use an Lm1+Aux box, our own supra uses a UEGO and it is spot on when comparing readings.

 

Just a thought though, you take the reading from the tail pipe using Innovates Clamp? does that not naturally read leaner? and most tuners add to the value on the lm1? what if there was a slight exhaust leak, or air being drawn into the system? or depending on the angle of the exhaust turbulance around the tailpipe drawing air in??? just some ideas..

 

Even if an aftermarket Wideband Sensor is fitted, i fit a bung for the LM1 on the DP as i dont really trust the tailpipe method - but thats just me lol (and i know tuners have been doing it that way for years ;))

adjust the gain setting on the AFR option , set it to 2 it should do the trick , else take it in steps of 1.3 -1.6 -1.8 etc ...

 

I take it that is when your using a aem ecu?

Thanks for your input, the exhaust clamp i use is modified so it actually sits right up in the exhaust for maximum flow. It also works on a venturi effect and have yet to find it read wrong but im sure a big exhaust leak would effect it. The problem is tho the aem wideband on one instance was reading 13:1 and the my innovate was reading 11.7:1. So that puts out that theory as no way it can get richer back there from exhaust leak etc.

 

I would prefer as you say to use the down pipe method but i just dont have time to jack a car up and weld in or fit the sensor when mapping around europe. Like i said have tested my exhaust clamp lots with downpipe method and readings are always spot on.

 

Maybe i just lucky and have mapped car with dogdy sensors but just slighty concerned me seeing on 3 cars now in last couple of monthes
