Homer
Why is steak so expensive and chicken isn't? I'll try and give a sensible answer It's all down to production costs and turn product turnaround time. A cow takes over a year to mature, whereas a growth hormone fed chicken will take a matter of weeks. Cows require a relatively enormous amount of time and money get one ready for slaughter. Masses of grass, over 40kg per day (so a LOT of land), plenty of vetinary care, housing and feed in the winter, the list is endless. A chicken is a small and easy to manage animal that doesn't need any real space, can be bred very quickly and take seconds to slaughter and package. So, when you compare the weight of meat produced from each animal compared to the production and packaging cost, the chicken is by far the cheaper. Also, it's worth mentioning that between normally 60% and 80% of the price you pay in the supermarket is their mark-up for the delivery and packaging. Most farmers only make around 1-2p profit for chicken, and a hundred or so per cow.
Sharpie
Bloody supermarkets, our farmers should get more for what they do.

ivan
I still don't get it Homer. With the amount of steaks you can get out of a cow, lb for lb it should be cheaper. I love my fillet steak but it only makes financial sense to buy it a whole fillet at a time.

Supragal
I think chicken is more expensive than steak. You can get a MASSIVE steak for the same amount as a couple of puny chicken breasts.

Yeah but that tends to be the tough chewy rubbish that shrinks to nothing when cooked.
