CarlT67
Heres the story.... Drove the Supra Thursday night and parked up as usual. Sure i had turned all the lights off and stereo etc.... Went out to the car Friday morning, turned the key to start and nothing, just the sound of a relay ticking or something... No Starter turn over nothing but all auxiliaries powered as usual Then jump started the car and thought it must of just been a flat battery. Took it for a half hour or so drive to charge the battery back up. Tried to start the car again later on and nothing, however after I finished the drive it did turn over straight away... Had a meter on the car batt. and found that the alternator is charging. Is it just the battery not holding charge or the starter motor. Im thinking it can't be the starter as it always starts on jump start and sure a broken starter even wouldn't react to that...? All help appreciated PS did try a new battery from halfords which still didn't solve the problem, could of been a duff one though...?

Which auxiliaries? Try the windows as they require a fair bit of power and a low battery would show up with the windows struggling to move. Did you charge up the new battery before you fitted it in the car?

Windows were good I think but not sure, and lights were as bright as usual. The battery said it was pre charged Also to update just went down to start the car and fine, its has been sitting there since 2.30 after a jump start and small run... puzzling... D8MOA
could still be a startor motor, lift the bonnet next time it CLICKS to see if its comign from under there

Branners
have you checked the battery terminal connections to make sure they are on good and tight? JB
Mike B
have you checked the battery terminal connections to make sure they are on good and tight? JB done that once myself when I was young. Felt like a right prat when the rac tightened up the connector after a 2 hour wait.. just gives the impression of a flat battery after a jump start. CarlT67
have you checked the battery terminal connections to make sure they are on good and tight? JB Funny you should say that as after the battery swap I done today, tightening the battery terminals and the wire crimp assembly's, its starting fine, but this was checked at close intervals so I would guess the real test will be tomorrow morning..... If there was a poor connection though wouldn't the clock etc also be dead or would it be a case of just giving a large resistance allowing lights etc to work but not give sufficient power for start...? Yes to number 2.... everything works perfectly, clocks, all ign systems, no warning lights when running and no sign of any problems when ign is on and engine not running. Try and turn her over and the lights dim, the starter moter does little if nothing and it just feels like a flat battery....
JohnA
If all else fails and it still does it with full battery, check if it's easier to start in warm conditions. If so, and it has high mileage, you may want to change the starter motor contacts

So are you agreeing with the starter being broke or the battery terminals loose...? FURTHER UPDATE Just went down to check the car again this morning and it started no worries, hoping thats problem solved and it was just loose terminals (fingers crosses) Thanks for all replies
CarlT67
Now just been down stairs to run my brother home and nothing again, just the large tick again. Opened the bonnet and while turning the key I could here the starter rely in the battery fuse box near the battery and another louder tick. Car started after about 20 attempts, drove to my brothers about 15 minute drive. Turned the car off. Went to start it again 5 minutes later and the same tick again, jacked the car up and can now confirm that the ticking is coming form the starter area. Hoping now its just the starter contacts and not the starter itself.

Marty
Will be the contacts on your solenoid then mate, thats the noise you car hear, the solenoid engaging, but if the contacts on it are knackered, it wont send the juice through on to the starter once its engaged, thats why its not working. Did exactly the same thing with mine, refurbed the solenoid contacts and voila
