Just bought some dumbells to add a (small) bit of weight lifting to my morning stretch/warm up routine, but is it a good idea to do this kind of thing in the morning before any breakfast? I feel a lot better after doing stretching and a few situps and stuff, but not sure on lifting weights, feels like hard work, maybe because I'm new at it, or maybe because I need to eat!!!

I know foods pretty important with weights, so I'm not going silly with them, just a few exercises, but still - eating a good idea?

Sorry but the word cock springs to mind!

Working out first thing takes some getting used to (training first thing in the morning) but after a while your body gets used to eating later and you wont be waking up feeling hungry. Try eating a little something an hour or so before bed - fruit, yogurt or half your usual measure of protein shake.

If your energy is really low, munch on a bit of dried fruit (dates or organic apricots) or try an energy drink with your workout. I used to make a mix of water, orange juice and a couple of Tspoons of fructose. It really depends on what you body is happy with, trial and error will tell you.

I honestly can't wait from ending one session until the next. My main motivation is being able to feel the benefits after each work out.... amd being able to go to the beach without looking like a beanpole ;)

ha ha, your not training no where near hand enough then ;):p

although if your lifting more and feeling the benifit then you cant go wrong really

How come every time a physical self-improvement thread comes along, the bodybuilder types seem to think the ultimate goal of anyone who ever lifts a weight is to end up looking like Conan the Barbarian and offer advice on that footing?

Maybe some people just want to improve a bit and feel better about themselves while still leading a normal life without a no-pain-no-gain mentality and a monotonous diet of protein shakes, bran, and steroids at to-the-minute times during the day :D

What Ian said, I've never had a protein drink in my life!!

I just want to get a bit more definition to my current muscles, not looking for a massive training plan, only 30 mins a day or something, just wondered if eating was a good idea, and that's been answered (although I'm a cock now for some reason as well).

Was a good point Ian. To be fair, to go all out with weight training is, to put it bluntly, a pain in the arse! Its just not possible to eat every 3 hours or so and prepare the kind of meals you really need, especially when your at work. Everyone has different goals set in their mind.

People should remember that anything they do is better than nothing! But it doesnt mean that a few supplements along the way wont make people reach their targets more easily.

I was working with a guy built just like Conan today. He was flippin HUGE, I mean ENORMOUS. When the Glock went off it didn't even recoil.... that's how strong his grip was!

I felt ashamed at my beanpole like figure, so hid behing the other beanpoles ;) LOL

Well yeah I meant it as a good natured poke at the bodybuilders anyway, and I can understand their passion for it as I'm a born-again runner heh. I've changed my diet pretty much 100%, in fact a scary amount of my life has changed over the last 2 years and it hasn't even involved a woman forcing the change on me (whoops I mean 'compromising' sorry :D )

I think people need aims when they try and get fit. Here, if it doesn't bore you, were mine:

One - be able to undo bolts on the car and shift it around and move wheels easier, and be able to do it for longer without feeling wrecked. I've acheived that with some weights and pressups and going running.

Two - To enjoy paintball more. So I went running. And, my god, how much has that helped my overall fitness and my life in general (apart from pretty much saving it lol), never mind paintball! I can do a whole day in blazing sunshine now and as long as I stay hydrated I just don't miss a beat - before I used to be wrecked by midday and it just wasn't fun after that.

Three - feel better about myself. Yep, it does that in spades. I've lost fat, gained muscle, look better, feel better, need less sleep, blah blah but the best thing is the insufferable smugness you get after doing exercise when other people around you haven't and don't :D

Now I've decided I want to do a 10km run in about 50 minutes, and I'm a way off that yet. 59 minutes is my personal best so far, so a long way to go! I just can't work out yet whether running at the same speed longer or shorter distances faster will help me towards that - any advice on that front...? :D

Also I've lost all surface fat around the legs, and my trousers are falling down so the hips and gut are down, I just need to trim the top half of me now, any ideas on that front? Probably upper body exercises of course but practical stuff without recourse to a gym or heavy equipment?

Pfft, Glock  9mm is a toy round and 45's are a pussycat, if it was a 10mm auto I'd be more impressed, snappy bastards, and if it was a .40S&W I'd be impressed if he even hit the target, ghastly round. Experience counts much more than muscle mass when it comes to controlling handgun recoil :) Don't like Glocks anyway, I can't get on with the grip angle.

Hey do they let private punters on your range for a blat :D I miss my handguns :(

Ooh guns, much better than the unhijacked thread! :D I want a go on a shooting range one day, never fired a gun, do they do things like that?

Pops in law is a runner, does 10 miles regularly, and he hasn't really changed in size, must be his metabomolism.

Hmm, but they are virtually idiot proof and are *quite* difficult to break (unless they are left on the roof of the car)

Running will not change size, but make you leaner.... like a whippet ;)

Size increase comes from making the body build muscle, which is done by slightly overdoing exercises with heavy weights.

True and not true. I've definitely built up muscles on my legs from running. They will build up to the level required to do the job, so once you are at that level, unless you start running with a backpack full of gold Supras, you'll only get more efficient and increase your stamina (and continue to burn fat if you have it). I think :)

I wouldn't want to build up more leg muscle than I need to run fast and hard with as it's just excess weight then.

PS you left a gun on your car roof?!!?

It appears you are trying to build muscle and become leaner at the same time. Unfortunately, this is just not possible.

In order to gain muscle mass, you must consume at least 500 calories in excess of your daily needs.

In order to become leaner, you need to consume 500 calories less than your daily requirements.

My suggestion is to bulk for 6 months and then cut for a couple of months so that you can see what progress you have made.

Unfortunately, it doesnt happen over night and you will need to bulk for at least a year to see any decent improvement.

With regards to your workouts, I suggest that you do Full Body workouts 3 times a week. This will incorporate 4 compound exercises and 2 isolation exercises.

The link below is a fantastic workout and I have been following this program for a consideable amount of time with great results.

There are just a couple of things you need to remember...

Your diet is more important than your exercise.

You need to lift enough weight so that you are struggling to complete your last set of any exercise.

Also, ensure that you eat 6 proportional meals a day. Try not to take in too many carbs for your last two meals.

Last but not least, with regards to protein shakes. Have one an hour before your workout and then have another straight after your workout. It is adviable to mix approx 30g of glucose powder into your post workout shake.

I hope this helps....

Ooh thanks dude, again a bit too much though!! Are you saying if I do 20 mins of stretching (mainly for TKD flexibility) and some basic situps and pressups and jogging on the spot etc. Then 20-30 mins of some basic dumbell lifts in the evening; that it won't actually make any difference?!?!?!?!

I don't want to be a beefcake, I just want to lose some of my flabby belly (not too bad TBH, not even noticeably flabby through clothes) and gain a little bit more muscle on my arms (and maybe chest), won't this simple routine help?

BTW I'm 5'11" and just under 14 stone, so could do with losing a stone as well.
