randy
Hi guys! I need your help with this I have a greddy Profec-B spec boost controller installed and When I have it on high boost at about 19psi there is a weird drowning {grrrr} kinda noise coming from the engine while the engine revs on full throttle up to the 7k redline. But on lower boost at about 15psi it does not make this noise. I don't have any idea what this sound is and why it comes only on high boost. I have had my plugs gapped down to .026" to handle the extra boost as it was jerking and backfiring on high boost earlier. Appreciate your help. THOR Racing
It may still be the spark plugs breaking down. Have you tried a colder grade plug. The re-gapping works up to a point but eventually a colder grade plug is needed. Or ....Is this detonation? Hope not!!! Pete
Terminator
Does it sond like pinking?
Guest Martin F
Could possibly be the Profec B solenoid struggling under high boost.
randy
You think the spark plugs are not able to take the additional boost? Im using the stock platinum ones what happens when the spark plugs dont deliver a good spark or get too hot? Do you think it could be the quality of the fuel? Running 87 octane fuel as this is the highest available here unless I use 100 octane aviation fuel which is really expensive and hard to get. Don't understand answer regarding solenoid valve the profec B spec I have is brand new.
Syed Shah
Ouch, J-spec turbos + 19psi + 87octane = trouble. Your are really overboosting your turbos, even with 100octane AND some decent plugs, you shouldn't be running over 18psi max.
Barry
87?! Doesn't a bottle of VODKA have a higher octane rating than that, you'd be better off filling up with water !!!! Seriously though, I'd not risk running 19psi on that shite! You need to add about 5 bottles of octane booster to every tank of petrol.!
Terminator
I think the Jspec got its lower bhp rating from the lowest grade of fuel it would run on. The lowest in Japan is 95 I think. They run best on101ron, so get some aviation fuel, before you do some serious damage.
THOR Racing
87RON and 19psi.........Oh My G*d!!! Here is an example....... I run with the following 18psi boost 97RON Octane Fuel Water Injection No octane booster NO FMIC Hybrid Turbos NGK Plugs (1 grade colder than stock) Now all was well with my Supra until I recently had to fill up with normal unleaded 95RON, the first time in about 2.5yrs, BOY! What a difference it made. The car was miss firing on WOT, it was a real lemon, stuttering all over the place. I had to just sit back and be content with not touching the turbos and just cruise home. As soon as I put the 97RON back in all was well again. This simple example goes to show how only 2 points in RON for fuel makes a huge difference. Now I accept that it shouldn't have been quite so bad and that probably it was indicating my plugs needed changing or regapping but it illutrates a point. LOWER YOUR BOOST OR INCREASE THE OCTANE RATING OF YOUR FUEL. You'll never get anywhere near the performance power levels expected from the MkIV Supra with crap fuel. That's it's worst enemy. Octane booster will be expensive to add in all the time but believe me once you feel the difference in power a few RON makes you'll never go back. randy
Thanks a lot guys!Guess I was killing my turbos and the engine. I am going to wind down the boost to 18psi and use some aviation fuel 100 RON but just one thing Is it Ok to run on aviation fuel as I am told it is leaded? Will I feel the difference with this fuel immediately? I mean can you tell the power increase or is it just minimal and good for the engine? Terminator
I may be talking OOMA but I thought lead was an additive for lubrication purposes, I don't think it does any engine damage but kills cats.
Branners
Can I also take a wild guess and say its probably a little 'warm' in Bangalore this time of year...? High outside temps can really cause problems on cars running high boost. JB
Guest Martin F
And O2 sensors.
Bradb
Sorry, wheres Bangalore?
randy
yeah! It is pretty hot about 27C. So I guess aviation fuel is OK cause I dont have any cats on. Dude are you serious about where Bangalore is? It is in India and is the I.T Capital also we have the highest concentration of software companies after silicon valley. Every big US software firm operates from here and have their bigest R&D facilities after the US in Bangalore, also now we have the call centres for service companies around the world and do a lot of back office work for banks, insurance etc.. THOR Racing
We have a number of guys working over here in the UK at Nokia Network Systems from Hughes Software Systems (I think!) HSS. Nokia sees the Indian software engineering market as a cheaper source of labour than in the UK, hence more and more UK contractors are loosing jobs and more and more indian ones are filling the spaces. Nothing against them or their skills (they are all highly educated) but you do have to wonder what our (UK) government is up to. Anyway we digress. tDR
Yep, why pay someone from the UK £30k when someone in India will do it for £3k. Some regulations need to be put in place or a hell of a lot of IT and Customer Service jobs are gonna get outsourced to India I just finished my computing degree too, seems I'm a year too late and a lot of companies aren't taking on any graduates this year Dowturn in the IT industry etc.
randy
Yeah my friend India's only core strength is in IT, Communication and Research and Development so the government is going all out in this area as you might know we are getting killed in manufacturing with cheap chinese goods{labour cost again lower} Although right now there big impetus on precision engineering components like for automobiles, and mechanical/surgical instruments as we have a lot very skilled mechanical engineers thanks to you Brits who imparted that skill in the old days. One particular business which is growing phenomenaly are call centers growth of 360% annually for the last 2years !! Sorry for going out of topic soo much!! GT Twins for £500 anyone? I know about the call centres thing. I used to work in one of Sky Television's call centres before I started uni and they were running a pilot scheme back then. Basically shipped over a number of staff and their families to help set up a trial call centre over there. Those staff will be training a bunch of Indians to do my old job (and their jobs the fools) for £1 an hour and in the end all calls to Sky Television will be routed on the cheap to India where Sky can have those calls answered for a 500% reduction in labour costs. Gonna be a lot of jobs lost sometime in the not too distant future in the UK. Scary stuff.
