Knock Reader/Analyser.

Recommended Posts

I will be testing a new knock reader in the next few weeks, to see if its a good one for the Supra, its comparable to the Knock Link, but has much more usable features, comes with its own sensor, and is calabrateable from 6 to 9 kHz,and its also adjustable for amplititude, it has a real time display and you can set your own warning parameters, the warning feature is both visual and audible.

Will post up my results, once i have had time to evaluate it.

One of the main reasons i am testing this one, is because i don't want to have to sit with det cans/headphones on while i'm making mapping adjustments, as once it is dialled in, i can see and hear without looking like nobby nerd;) + i like to hear whats going on with traffic road conditions etc.

Was that aimed at me :D

End of day its what you prefer. I would like to hear something than just looking at a box with flashing lights when its hearing a certain frequency. I looked at the phormula stuff and would have brought one if it has a audio output.

Why do you look like Nobby nerd?:p

Seriously though wearing det cans always makes me feel a little disconnected from what going on, i would hate to be deaf:(

I know what you mean if i was deaf i would be jobless.

Either way im interesting to hear your results if you need help anytime with it let me know

I'm interested too :) I use det cans for mapping but for everyday use I'd like to get the KnockLite working as it's small and relatively unobtrusive. I've gotta fit a Bosch sensor though as it hates the stock ones. One day :)

Ian did you have any luck with the HKS knock amp?

I like the look of this, http://www.phormula.co.uk/ks3.aspx

and at the price its efo worth thinking about, especially with an extra Bosch wideband knock sensor added

The Knock Analyser KS-3 is currently only available for SR20DET Engines. (Nissan S14, S14a and Pulsar)

For what reason is beyond me TBH, it looks like any other Standalone Knock detection system, if it was Programmed for the standard sr20det knock sensors i could understand why, but it comes with its own Bosch Sensor?

The phormula unit has just been tested and developed with the sr20 engine but that does not mean it wont work with other engines. Each engine has a certain freq range where det is most present with the sr20 it seems its between 6-9 kHz but tbh that where it is on most engine. I know the 2jzgte and 3sgte knock sensors only listen for freq range 6 kHz.

See the graph below with shows an example of how det changes in different bore sizes. (mode 1)

There are some formulas to work out freq range but i find this chart is always 98% right. But i just keep the freq open between 6 and 8 kHz on my det system to have a wider range

The knock frequency on the Supra should be around 6.6 kHz calculated from bore, but there are other factors involved, however its getting the amplitude configured that needs to be sorted, the KS-3 has only been successfully tested on the SR20DET engine so far which is why its only recommended for that!

I am testing it to see if it can be successfully used on the Supra, and AFAIKS there is no real reason why not.

Cheers Ryan, i was thinking the system used the stock sensor locations and outputed the signal to the ecu via dual plugs or something. Guess will just have to wait on Trickys report before the buying spree starts :)

OT : Know i'd seen that chart before, have you ever installed or tuned the V3.3 ECU? looks interesting at the price, been a few of the 7mgte crowd interested in it

Hi Bondango

The system uses some bosch sensor as they are broadband sensors and dont just listen to a certain freq like standard toyota ones.

I have not installed a V3.3 ecu yet but the guys at vems are waiting to send one to me soon for some testing but i feel its abit too early in devolpment at present to match other ecus like the Link g3. The link g3 would be a good buy for the 7mgte crowd. I have just got a few over from NZ and could certainly help with fitting etc

  • 2 months later...

May as well update my part in this - I'm going to fit a Bosch knock sensor and plumb the TurboXS monitor into that. At some point in the future when I do a load of other engine bay stuff as well. So don't hold your breath :)
