I am trying to identify my turbo! Help Please!

I am trying to identify my turbo to see if I can get replacement bearings for it. Failing that what the actual turbo is so I know which direction to go in with regards a replacement item.

The numbers on the ident plate are this

model T04 R

P/N 17200 -154100

S/N BI - 7008J

GTI P/N 465981 - 0008

Its got M24 and .70 A/R embossed on the compressor housing.

I would like to find out if the r stands for it having ball bearings in t04r and what the exhaust A/R is. Also the size of the wheels would be usefull to know.

Yeah see thats a 67 and mine is supposed to be a 61

That is exactly what my compression side looks like though even down to same embossed writing being totally identical. My turbine exit is also bolt pattern like this one but that page says its a t3 which i assume is the turbine inlet flange?

So we seem to have found my compression side which looks like its a 67 not a 61??

So now to identify the side with no writing on it the exhaust side.

OK now I really think I have cocked up here.

I bought a T67DBB turbo and it looks smaller than the one I have fitted to my car. After some more investigation I have discovered that my exhaust ar is 96 on my existing turbo and the one I just bought is only 68.

Would I then be correct in thinking that I have just bought a turbo capable of less power than I had before?

One question though, how comes the turbo I have only managed 455 bhp if its a t67 with 70 ar inlet and 96 ar exhaust?

Lends a bit more weight to the theory that hks turbo's are just rebadged garretts lol

It's not a theory, Garrett do make the HKS turbos, whether they are just rebadged or there are any spec difference is unknown.

The T67 from precision can't be compared side by side...with straight numbers.

1. The T04R you have is a divided housing this changes what the 0.96 means. In a divided housing you have extra metal in the way and that means that the A/R has to be larger to stay the same as the non divided T67. So the 0.68 A/R undivided is close to the 0.96a/r divided housing in actual flow terms.

2. Precision make them small frame on purpose, they keep the weight down. The actual wheels are then bits that push the air, you should take the cover off the housings and measure the wheels to really appreciate it, not the case.

Oh so the mystery just gets deeper then. OMG could it be any more complicated. Is BL precision then? Will the 0.68 A/R I am fitting actually spool better than the 0.96 A/R divided housing turbo I have? I am loath to open up a perfectly serviceable turbo to see what sizes the wheels actually are. The old one needs opening up to change the bearings if I can actually find replacement bearings for it.

I don't see any HKS logo's on the old turbo housing.

Yeah, you can't look just at the exhaust A/R and compare different turbos that way. A bigger A/R exhaust housing will spool slower and be less restrictive for the same turbo only. Different turbos have different turbine designs etc, so a .68A/R on one turbo may well make loads more power and spool slower than a 1.05 or something on another. Or vice versa.
