Help!! New Supra Owner!!

Hi,

I am now a new owner of a Supra MKIV, and am very pleased after wanting one for years!! Unfortunately its only an NA, but hopefully in a couple of years I will be in for a TT....

I have a problem though. I picked up the car last night and after about 3 miles of driving noticed a big red warning sign appear in the middle of the speedo!! Whats going on??!!

It has 69,990 km on the clock - is it something to do with a service reminder or something more serious??!! Please help.... (its an import if that makes any difference)..

Thanks in advance for any help guys! I am hoping this is nothing serious!!!

Does it come on solid, or flicker, or intermittent?

Can be any number of things. If its flickering, it could be as simple as your bonnet not closed all the way causing the light to come on / off.

Other than that, if its solid you need to try and pull engine codes to see whats causing the warning light.

Thanks for the replies....

The light comes on every time after about three minutes of starting the engine. Its a solid red triangle, and doesnt turn off till the engine is turned off!!

I wouldnt mind, but I only got the car yesterday!!

Faye - I will get some photo's done and will introduce myself asap... Nice to meet some other Supra owners!

Hi Attiluak,

There are no other warning lights on at all. Its just this single red triangle in the centre of the speedo....

Is it a warning from the computer? I am worried that it is a warning about something serious like brake fluid or something!!

The car is coming up to 70,000km on the clock - I was wondering if the light was some sort of service reminder or something? Is this a feature on Supra's??

i wouldn't worry about it too much, if it was serious then there would be other warning lights or you would be able to tell the car wasn't right!

try checking your lights, all of your fluid levels and make sure the bonnet is shut properly, if i remember rightly a low brake fluid level will set off a warning light.

as far as i know there is no service warning light on the mkiv.

oh and welcome aboard the board m8:)

Thanks Attiluak

You have put my mind at rest a little. I will check all the lights and brake fluid tonight and hopefully that will solve the problem.

Its nice to hear advice from more experianced owners, so a big thank you to all that replied!!

Nick,

Do the lights on the top right hand side all come on with the ignition and then go out when you start the engine? The reason I ask is that I'm wondering if you are seeing the engine oil warning.

IIRC, it would normally show the red triangle and the engine warning light together.

I had this problem after an oil change once. The level looked OK on the dip stick, about half way, but the warning kept coming on after a couple of miles of driving. I topped the oil up a bit and it's been fine since then.

Hi Jake

I am not totally sure about that one mate. I am going out in it now for lunch so will check exactly what lights come on and what lights go off as I turn the car over.

I will reply as soon as I get back with the findings!!

Thanks mate

Hi Jake

Just got back mate from the drive. This is what happens:

Turn the ignition on and all lights appear including two oil lights, one red and one orange. Then when the car starts up all lights go off, except for the red triangle warning light.

I have not checked the oil or brake levels as yet, but will do tonight.

If it is something to do with oil level, what oil would you recommend for a NA Supra?? Is it fully synthetic??

Thanks for your help again mate!

OK, if the oil level and oil pressure warning lights are working I guess it's not an oil problem.

Is the red triangle light on all the time the engine is running or does it come on after a few miles?

Take a look here:

http://mkiv.supras.org.nz/techo.htm#ENGINE_CODES

I can't access that site from work but I think it's the right link for reading the error codes.

Cheers for that Jake - I will have a read....

The light originally came on after a few miles, but seems to now come on straight away. Its almost as if whatever the problem was originally, is getting worse!!

Anyway, I will take a look at that web link - hopefully I will find some useful engine info there...

Thanks mate

It should come on straight away as a warning that you've got the handbrake on - that light warns of lots of things! Obviously it should go off again when you disengage the handbrake.. just wondering if you started her up to check warning lights, but didn't actually move off.

erm not too sure about the active spoiler!! or down button.... sorry only picked it up on Wednesday and dont have a clue about active spoilers!! Any tips on finding out if it has one??

Regarding the lights - they are on when the handbrake is up, but when I drop it they go off - problem is, that when I have drove for a few minutes, the engine warning triangle comes on again - very strange!!

I don't think the NA's had the active spoiler, even as an option. The only NA's that I have heard about with active spoilers are those where the owners have dicussed fitting them on this BBS, and thats if they managed to do it, I recall there was some questions about the NA wiring loom having the correct redundant connections in it.

Thanks for all your tips guys!!

Sounds like I should just bite the bullet and get it checked out at a toyota dealership.

I have checked the brake fluid level and its on Max (or almost on Max), so it looks like it cant be that....

Oh well - not what I was hoping for after only a day of owning it. Apart from this problem its been everything I was expecting and more!

Regards

Nick
