Guest NE1L
I have just bought an FTO and I know this is a Supra forum but you guys seems to know your stuff and I can't find a decent FTO forum anywhere Plus I am also on the look out for a Supra as some of you will know from my previous posts Anyway. I bought the FTO GPX the other day and the underside has some surface rust because it hasn't been undersealed. Now I took a mechanic friend with me who checked it all over and he informed me it was just surface rust and there was not a hint of severe corrosion at all So my question. How much do you think it'll set me back to have it all prepared underneath (wire brushed, rust treated etc) and then undersealed? I would attempt it myself but I have no where other than the street to get the car jacked up etc to get to work. plus I'd rather get it proffessional done so I know it's right. Secondly do any of you guys know good companys or places to have it done? I stay in Glasgow so somewhere near me would be handy all though not a necessity? Please help as I know you guys know your stuff
Ian R
These people used to so it http://www.dicksonsmotorgroup.co.uk/location.asp may still do for around a 100 notes IIRC
Guest NE1L
£100!!!!!!! Seems great. I was fearing someone would come back and tell me to do it would be £500 or something.
Elmo
If I was looking to buy a car and I saw that it was under sealed, I would be suspicious that it was hiding something. IMO I'd leave it.
Guest NE1L
But won't not undersealing it eventually mean major corrosion and major repair bills? After all it's already starting to rust just now?
wile e coyote
Im doing mine my self . dirty and dusty job but well satisfying and also you can spot things that might need attention that you would never have known about
edge
To have this done profesionaly will cost about £400 - £500 depending on size. Will take about 2 days also in good weather. In the land rover scene there was a guy who done this as a day job and done a superb job and came highly reccomended.
JODY T
Dont use a underseal mate, it looks hideous and as some people have said 'potential buyers might be put off thinking 'whats underneith it' Best option would be to use a clear Waxoyl..... http://www.edirectory.co.uk/pf/880/mia/d/hammerite+waxoyl+clear+refill+can+5+litres/pid/1346824 That way your protected yet, itll look clean and tidy... and people can still see the chassis
Sheefa
I thought most imports were undersealed when they arrived? Mine was anyway, not surprisingly! Probably to hide a few things too
Guest NE1L
Most companys do underseal they're imports now as soon as they arrive. But some don't and leave it as a customer option whether they want to pay to have it done or not. My car was imported by a Japanese guy who had moved over here and brought it with him. Obviously he didn;t realise exactly how harsh or climate would be to the car and never bothered to have it under sealed. Anyway. I know nothing in detail about this. So really all I wanna know is what is the best option to stop the under side from rusting any more and to keep it in good condtion for years to come. I do plan to keep my FTO for a while. Thanks so far
Markie
I have had three imported cars now and undersealed all of them. I am sure each time it cost me under £100. But the Supra a bit more because of the size. All the times seems like they have done a decent job. If its not been sealed then get it done. Especially if you have a lot of snow in your area up there or live by the coast. My view it does not really hide things as you could still tell if someone had done some dodgy pigeon shit welding or something underneath it I for one did not have the Supra on ramps inspecting the underside of it before I brought it. I would guess like most, or was I too trusting?
