Smellywelshman
OK, so my supe doesnt get used all that much, weekends usually as I've got a works van. This is why Im hoping I'm right with my diagnosis!?! Last Saturday I was going over to my mates far a medium sized p*ssup (ended up with me walking 15miles home, but thats another story!). I was all ready for starting out, I get in to the Princess, turn the key and..... click. Hmmm, so I try again....click..... again.... click. FUCK!!! So I close the car, lock it with the alarm fob, open it, and try again. It starts, no probs.I try numerous times and it either clicks, or starts. When it does start it does so with no sluggishness or any signs of low battery at all. It either clicked, or it started. The battery I've got is a bit of a small, poxy one. So, my question is, is it the battery thats at fault? I've not had a problem in the last 2 years that I've owned the car and 2 years is a good life for a cheap battery (isn't it?). Does anyone have any other ideas as to what it might be other than the battery.
merckx
I would say it's bad or corroded connections on the starter motor. One of these, Austin Princess?

mattanna
Battery is gone get a calcium hbc 005 from Halfords, had same symptoms on the aristo and new battery has cured all, you need a big ass battery buy the best you can afford, halfords one is good though:)
Sharpie
IMO if you get 2yrs out of a battery, you are doing well. You only talk of one click when turning the key not click, click, click in rapid succession which, is the usual sign of a dead battery. If you have a multimeter you can see what the output of your battery is before you turn it over. Sounds very much like your starter motor contacts. Have a search, it's a job you can do yourself. Smellywelshman
Yeah, it was only one click.... then nothing. There have been some symptoms before though, come to think of it. Slight delay on starting on turning the key, that sort of thing. How much are we talking peeps?
peter richards
get a new battery first, eliminate that possible problem . does sound like starter motor contacts , do a search , i think there was something done on refurb
Sharpie
I think the refurb kit costs £10-20 from Mt T. see here http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=51682&highlight=starter+overhauling
Smellywelshman
Cheers peeps, was just needing some moral fibre before spending 80 bangers on a fookin battery that I may possibly have not needed. d'ya dig? By the way, anyone know of somewhere that supplies AA batteries for the Supra for less than a kings ransom?
merckx
Don't waste money on a battery yet. If the car can start normally after an an attempt at starting when it just clicks - meaning that it can jump into life quickly with the starter motor turning the engine like normal , this suggests that the battery is working okay . stevie_b
Does this sound familiar? http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=78173 For me, the fault was worn-out starter motor contacts.
dangerous brain
Yeah I'd say no to a new battery just yet as they are bloody expensive for a good one. If you have access to another car borrow its battery and see if it does the same with that one. You can check the voltage with a multimeter with your battery still in the car, you should see a good solid 12 volts or at least high 11's To me though really sounds like the starter circuit has issues, remember that old TV advert years ago "dodgy solenoid mate dodgy solenoid" Do we have solenoids? That sounds exatly like what I've got! Right then, I'll go down that route first. Cheers gentlemen, extremely helpful and you may have just saved me 80 fazoons!
