Sky+ question

Hey All,

I already have standard sky, the people before me had Sky+ so all cables and lnb etc are installed already.

Can I buy a sky+ box from ebay and use it and just wire up the second feed or do I need different subscription.

I called sky and tried to get just a box but they are insistant that they want to install it when I have said no need, they said fine but would still charge 30 quid installation anyway.

You need two feeds from your dish... we just got Sky to do it, not sure what cables are involved?

Two feeds = two cables into the box. But if the previous owners had Sky+ anyway, they will already be there.

Where in Berkshire are you? If you're close, I can lend you a box to try - my mate gave me his Sky HD and Sky box - and I already have Sky + and Sky, so I can plug his HD into mine and you could borrow my Sky+ for a day. I'd need it back though!

Yeah I just had Sky+ installed. I think they charge an additional £10 per month to subscride to the Sky+ service if you don't have the box installed by them. Also, you can't just buy the box and install it yourself, so despite them advertising it as £99, its actually always going to be £99+£30.

The cabling is not an issue, the people before me had Sky+ and I recently installed new high grade cabling, I have tested both cables into my current sky box and they work fine.

As of July Sky no longer charge for Sky+

OK, as from July the 1st Sky dropped the £10 surcharge they previously levied for Sky+ unless you had the full package, in which case there was no charge anyhow. However once you install the sky+ box yourself you will need to contact Sky and tell them the you have upgraged your box to Sky+, they will ask you the following:

Viewing Card No.

Software Version No.

Skybox Serial No.

You can find the version and serial numbers by going TV GUIDE, Services, System set up.

Make sure for the next few hours the telephone line is connected and they will do the rest. It really is as simple as that. Any problems give me a shout as we have a fair bit contact with Sky and I may be able to help.

Thanks for the info.

Where is the best place to buy a Sky+ box and whats the difference between the models?

We only buy in Pace units, they are currently selling us the PVR3, the original PVR1 was ok but big and came with a 40gb drive, the PVR2 was pretty much the same spec as the 1 but smaller and in white. The PVR3 is a much nicer beast with a big drive and less prone to lock ups. They can be bought on Ebay (I have flogged a couple of pvr1s on there for about £70, but don't have any ATM), also various places in what satellite mag selling them. If you buy a SH one be prepared to replace the HD, not expensive and not difficult.

  • 6 months later...

i have a standard box, and wanted sky plus for my room, so i bought a box off ebay, bought a quad lnb from ebay also so all you do is change the single lnb to the quad one which is on your dish, then ran an additional two cables from it to the sky plus box in my room, then phoned up sky, told them that i want multi package as i have all the bits, so they sent me a viewing card, installed that, then phoned them again to activate the features and all works like a charm, no setting up no engineers and no rip off prices for the crap install they would of done :)

Hmm...guys, Like I said in my post...I live in an apartment with a communal dish. wiring up and replacing LNBs is NOT an option.

I am not that bothered about recording a channel and watching another. As long as I can run the Sky+ box off a single feed and record my programmes when I am not around.

I got Sky+ about two months ago. The price Sky gave me started off at £229 and i haggled them down to £99. Told them my mate had just had sky plus installed free of charge. They said it was due to him being a new subscriber. I of course argued that this meant he had never given them a penny whereas i have been a sky subscriber for 5 years, so any deal you can give him i deserve too. They eventually agreed:d

Subscribed. My brother in law is in the same boat as IMI communal wire etc.

You can still pause the channel you are watching with single LNB feed etc so its worth it just for that. The newer box's also have the sky anytime function http://anytime.sky.com/ which the older box's don't. If you are buying one from Ebay I'd take the hit and buy the HD box instead as you can subscribe to sky+ with that box still and get the free to air HD channels AFAIK with 160GB storage space as standard. Its a doddle of a job to change the older boxes hard drive but you need to do some research as not all drives work.

Sky+ is free now as long as you subscribe to A package of some sort starts at £16. You can also get freeview on Sky http://www.stevelarkins.freeuk.com/freeview_on_Sky.htm

If you are installing your own kit from scratch don't do what I did and spend two days scratching your head, changing your hard drive, etc when in fact I'd picked up a signal from the wrong satellite an inch away from the sky signal :( Pillock lol.
