EVO IV, V or VI - What do you reckon Guys?

Chaps,

I'm thinking about buying an EVO as a daily runner. I don't need it for work so it is just a toy really but I don't know that much about them.

If you're anything like me then I often ignore most of the Jap car articles in the magazines in favour of Supra-only articles; hence my limited knowledge:innocent:

I have looked at the IV, V or VI as I can pick one up for cheap money at the docks, however, I would like to know which one is the best car in your opinion.

I probably won't tune it (well, perhaps a few small things) but otherwise, it will stay very much as I buy it.

Any help would be much appreciated fellas as I know a few of you own/have owned these cars.

Cheers all,;)

Andrew

There are notorious problems with the engines in the IV (not to say all) but they suffer frequently from what I think is called crankwalk, i'm not quite sure exactly what happens but my mate has a IV which only 2 months after he bought it went that way and now £2500 and untold hrs of work later it has a VI engine in it!

So my advice would be go for a VI and save yourself all the hassle I have seen him go through! I think the VI has a little more torque and better brakes too :)

I currently own an EVO6 RS2 as my daily drive and I was in the same position looking for either a IV, V or VI a while back.

My bro has an evo IV RS and I'd say all the variants were top notch cars really.

I chose the VI because for the money you get a car that has evolved tremendously, the power delivery and general handling is very good. I got a '51reg for £10k. (there's a pic of it in my garage - see sig below)

There are many changes between each version of the EVO. They may look similar from the outside but if you look through the technical manuals there are loads of improvements.

I'd reccommend an RS version.... the lighter weight rally base car. This comes without the active yaw control... a device that cuts in to stop the car from oversteering. (But on the other hand it is suppose to allow the car to make better use of the tyre grip around corners).

The AYC diffs require regular oil changes by the way (every 4000miles?

The RS versions usually come without many creature comforts, which make it much lighter than the GSR versions. But then there is a mid-way version called the RS2.... these usually come with electric windows etc. but all RS named cars come without the AYC diff.

Generally speaking :

EVO IV will be around £4000-£7000

EVO V will be around £7000-£11000

EVO VI will be around £9500-£15000

I got mine fairly cheap due to it being a high milage, but the service record was fully stamped and had never missed an oil change.

Much more info about these cars on the MLR by the way.

i bought the Evo as a daily/weekend car.. I wish i never sold the supra as i much prefered it and it was soooo much quicker.

IF anyone however wants to buy the car then i change the above statement to the following:

i bought the Evo as a daily/weekend car.. I wish i sold the supra as i didn't prefere it and it was soooo much slower.

Hard choice. We are doing a build engine on a E6 TM at the moment and I love that.

Good info Aron.

As others have said these are horrendously expensive cars to maintain - clutches and brakes are sodding expensive (buy Endless pads, 1/2 the price of OEM pads ;)) plus all the servicing adds up. Its probably why Mr Norris drives a Lambo :D

Gaz.

Need a logon mate /\

Ah sorry here's the copy and paste of what he's said.

His name is steve220 and I am sure that's his name on the MLR.

I remember his rover 220 turbo it was immaculate and this is no different. If the kids weren't so small at the moment (i.e. needing rear seats) I would be very tempted by it myself.

Here the spiel:

Due to new career change, i'm having to part with possibly the BEST car i've ever owned. She isn't ready just yet as i'm waiting for my clutch and gearbox to arrive. So i'm putting the Bait out now for an end of the month sell (hopefully )

Security

Toad Ai606 Cat 1 alarm.

There is a tracker on the car but I haven’t renewed, but it can be re-activated though.

10months Tax

4months MOT – the car sailed though last mot without any problems

There is a binder FULL of receipts and information about the car. There are no dents on the car that I’ve seen, the paint work is top notch and shines well. The car is regularly polished, and waxed every 2 months or so. The car has had an HPI check on it in the past by one of the owners who was on the MLR and it’s clean.

The car has service history in the UK though not in the book (all in receipts etc), I can’t translate Japanese, so can’t tell what I have here is actually service info or not. I’ve serviced the car religiously since I’ve had it every 4k miles with Millers Fully synth oil and genuine mitsi filter. The AYC fluid is self bled every 9k miles using AYC fluid from the local Mitsi garage. The car will have a genuine Mitsubishi service before I sell her to make sure everything is ok. The engine is sound; I take pride in my engine work and get fidgety if there’s even a slight tick that’s not right.

The car produced 371bhp/332Ibft at WRC Tech in Silverstone last June (2006) and since then I’ve fitted the intercooler and raised the boost a little. She pulls hard through every gear and puts a smile on my face every time! I have had almost 270 miles out of a run (from Brighton to Telford and to mates and back once home) and will do around 180-190miles doing a bit of everything.

Air con comes out freezing and has been checked by a mate at Halfords to check levels and all is well.

All warning lights go out after ignition. Only ever had a problem with the ABS sensor but that was sorted by an auto electrician and turned out to be the plug terminals had corroded so he replaced them and sealed it.

I’ve replaced a few things that annoyed me – I had a squealing coming from the alternator belt during winter, so replaced the belt and bought a brand new tensioner for it and its gone now. Had both N/S (front and rear) bearings replaced to try and find where a noise was coming from, turned out to be transfer box – that was replaced by a low mileage one supplied by co-ordsport.

The interior is clean but has wear to the right hand side of the driver’s side bolster.

This has been my pride and joy for 20 months and levels are regularly checked in the engine bay, I wouldn’t let anything on this car pass me buy if I knew about it, because of this, the car will have a new clutch fitted to it before the new owner has it as well as being re-under sealed.

The car has been seen by a lot of MLR members and I know Ian6xtreme will tell you how much time and effort i put into the car and how paranoid i get over little things lol.

the only bad thing about the entire car i know of is every so often (totally random and once warm) the car will drop the revs below 1k when you come to a junction. Gwyn from JT Hughes in Telford (ralliart blokey) tells me its an air leak after the maf somewhere. But i can't seem to find it. I'll keep looking though.

Maybe I'm missing something, but why would you buy one as a daily driver rather than use a Supra? They're no cheaper to run and no more practical.

They are 10times more practicle to be fair. 4 doors and usable rear seats along with a 'spacious' boot.

Usable in the snow and ice with the 4WD and on bumpy 'b' roads that farmers turd up with their tractors. There are places where I would take a car like an EVO where I would dream of taking my Supra ! ;)

Maintenance cost so far for me haven't been horrendous. Brake pads I have found to be around the £50-£90 for the medium quality stuff. With mine being an RS version I don't have to worry about oil change for the AYC diff every few hundred miles also.

If you keep them fairly standard then they don't cost the earth to run. Mod them too much and I agree, they can be a nightmare to own and maintain (as with any car really).

Guys, the responses are very much appreciated so thanks for taking the time to write up your thoughts and expertise on the Evo. I'll get my head in to all of your facts and figures over the weekend and see where that takes me.

Again chaps, thanks very much.;)

Best Regards to all,

Andrew
