JSPEC Auto gear change issue

Ive been battleing with this one for a while and this is my last effort before I take the car somewhere for them to have a look at it. And I searched and searched.

 

Problem: The Gear change is very jerky. The problem has developed within the last two months and happed once when I bought the car almost 5 months ago.

More recently the car is struggling to start. The starting issue is the same as if you try and start the car in D, tick and then nothing (as expected) but the cars in P. Try it a coule of times and its fine.

 

History.

 

First thing I did when I got this issue was check for error codes. No1 speed sensor reported so I checked it out, cleaned it up and found a split in one of the wires - repaired and reset the ECU.

 

Problem still occured - but Ive had no errors since. Ive checked and replaced fuses for TRAC and ABS (ABS works fine). Checked the speed sensors again and made sure there was nothing dodgy with the speed convertor. Only reason I looked at this was because when the auto spoiler is down it will sometimes go up on its own and then flutter for a bit.

 

Had a problem with the T/C as well, it would kick in but could not be turned off - this was resolved and caused by a bad ground.

 

Any one have any other sugestions before I go and waste some money??

Don't forget that when you drain the fluid you only get 2 out of the 5 litres out. The rest is in the torque convertor.

I did it by draining 2 litres, then adding 2 new litres, driving for a while shifting through all the gears (manually too using D, 1, 2, R etc) and then draining again until the fluid was coming out clean. I did this about 5 times (painful and a waste of fluid but saves opening the box).

 

Maybe someone has a better way of doing it than i did, but it worked for me....

There is a really good thread on how to change the fluid via the cooling pipes and it works:) But I think you will find it's a lot more than 5 litres, nearly double that if I remember correctly. I paid £46 for 5 litres of Toyota type 4. Think Oilman does a line of ATF that is a bit cheaper and compatible though, do a few searches and sure it will turn up something.

I stand corrected then... Anyway, whatever I did, it worked :)

 

Thankfully my dad works for BP, so he pulled some strings and his mate in Hong Kong posted me 20 litres of the stuff for free :)

 

 

Nice one. I noticed right away how much cleaner the gear changes were when I booted it just after flushing the 5 litres through. it's worth doing for sure.

would not have thought the fluid would make that much difference. I'll pay a visit to toyota to order some oil then. see if it makes much difference.

 

 

Oh yeh definately, my bet is whats in it aint the right stuff, being Toyota it would probably still change gear with chip oil in but not very well!
