Missile
Just had this e-mail from our IT Manager. Do you think i will loose the ability to use this site. ??? Dear all, As part of our on-going plans to improve our network security and defences against the growing threats of the internet we are introducing a new monitoring tool called Bluecoat. The device will be be live from this evening so you will notice some changes next time you go to access the internet. The tool will assist us in enforcing our IT policies to ensure we remain legally compliant and secure. As such you will be asked to read and understand the IT policies before you first access the internet. If you chose to skip this part of the process you will be reminded again each time you attempt to access the internet. Any updates to the IT policies will also be communicated in this way. All internet activity will be monitored in line with the policy and as always we will prevent access to inappropriate sites or sites that pose potential security risks. We will continue to block downloads of potentially harmful files that may contain malicious content such as Viruses or Spyware for obvious reasons, and will prevent downloads of music and video files as they use up expensive file storage. Access to sites which are clearly non business related will be restricted, including social networking sites as they tend to dramatically slow down everyone's internet access. Finally, you are reminded that you must not download software from the internet or install software from other media (including as USB devices, CD, Floppy disk, mobile phones) on FTA equipment without authorisation from the IT department. Our aim is not to discourage the use of the internet and we do allow access for reasonable personal use, but first and foremost it is a business tool. Where sites have been blocked and you require access legitimate business purposes we can relax the restrictions but approval may be required from your line manager. Thank you for your time. AlanM
We are pretty strict here but still access the forum, just things like eBay that are blocked and can't download anything at work, annoying when you can't open pictures someone has posted. If it is blocked ask them to lift the restriction as you access it at lunchtimes only ,, lol

edd_t
thats pretty standard stuff. we/I do the same. We've also had the same problem with gigs worth of facebook data, but I do let the users on at lunchtime. amazingly this forum isnt in a standard block list

penguin
easy way around it is to setup your personal computer (i use a laptop) to allow remote RDP access - and then you can "dial in" over the internet from anywhere and use it to do ANYTHING

Missile
I have a small desktop comp at home not doing alot. Could easily plug it into my work monitor. It has a duel cable thing at the back to run two comps. Can see myself getting the sack and not being able to use the net full stop lol. TLicense
At one place I worked, internet usage actually used to drop at lunch time, as everyone who was surfing the web whilst they should have been working, went out to lunch!
razza
I keep waiting for the email to come saying "get off the net and do some work...":d
Guest shifty
Doesnt sound good but like the others say, there are ways around it. We have a similar policy here but as i work in IT i point my internet access out via another ADSL line thats not monitored or filtered in any way

Ark
I can smell several disciplinary actions for "deliberately circumventing corporate IT usage policy". Just because you _can_ get around it, doesn't mean it's OK to do so. Be warned.

leelbuk
easy way around it is to setup your personal computer (i use a laptop) to allow remote RDP access - and then you can "dial in" over the internet from anywhere and use it to do ANYTHING logemin.com is good for that - 256bit encryption too so safer than transmitting your credit card details to paypal! We restrict sites using our proxy in Orange, but since Orange bought Wanadoo we have gained some Wanadoo network ports that connect to the IP backbone - so fast it maxes out a 100mbit ethernet connection Unrestricted too! michael
We use Bluecoat (with Surfcontrol) too, blocks some ridiculous sites but always lets this one through Lots of options that the person in charge can select to block different categories of site based on a massive database (around 8 million sites) they have available, just keep your fingers crossed that we aren't in "Web Communications" and your IT chap isn't a tossbag It's the "Online Games" category that annoys me the most, fair enough that they might want to block people from playing games all day long but the category also covers sites like ea.com so you can't find out about new games
SBDJ
easy way around it is to setup your personal computer (i use a laptop) to allow remote RDP access - and then you can "dial in" over the internet from anywhere and use it to do ANYTHING Not a lot of use if RDP is filtered though. At most places that implement this kind of policy properly direct internet access is disabled - so *all* access is then controllable...
